The Dota 2 Frankfurt Major: what you need to know

The group stages for the first-ever Dota 2 Major run tomorrow and Saturday, with the main event lasting from Monday to Saturday next week at Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt. This is the first of Dota 2’s ‘smaller’ regional championships: I say ‘smaller’ because it boasts a $3m prize pool. That exceeds every Dota 2 International prior to 2014 and every other tournament in every other competitive game, ever.

This is basically a bonus International: the same number of teams, the same format, and a world-class if not quite as eye-watering prize. Even so, there’s no reason to expect the Frankfurt Major to be any less dramatic than August’s main event.

What’s the format?

The group stages, which will be played over the next few days, will determine bracket placement in the main event. There are four groups of four teams, each playing best-of-threes in a double elimination format. Given the number of games taking place simultaneously, following all of the action in the group stages will be tough—but we’ll get to that in a minute.

The main event will be a double elimination bracket with all games played as best of three with the exception of the grand finals (best of five) and the first round of lower bracket games (best of one). On that basis, expect a bloody first day as the lower bracket teams scramble over each other for their tournament lives.

Where can I watch it?

All of the matches will be streamed on Twitch and via the official Dota 2 streaming site. You can also watch the matches in-client using Dota 2’s excellent spectator tools. This allows you to follow specific players, control the camera yourself, have your camera controlled by a specific commentator, or any combination of the above.

If you’re able to get to Frankfurt, the main event runs from 10:00 to 23:00 CET at Festhalle Frankfurt, Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage 1, Frankfurt. Its free to attend from Monday-Friday (though there’s likely to be some capacity restrictions) and a day ticket for the grand finals on Saturday costs €50.00. Get tickets and further information right here.

Where did IG go? And who is OG?

There have been some last-minute team changes due to the things that always happen at international esports events: Visa problems and surprise sponsorship. Chinese superstars IG encountered the former, and have been replaced by Newbee Young in Group C. OG, meanwhile, is the new name of (monkey) Business.

Which group stage matches should I watch?

There’s going to be a lot happening at once over the next few days and it’s very hard to choose which matches to watch. With that in mind, let’s break it down by day:

November 13th: Group A and B

Group A comprises Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, Virtus. pro and Newbee. EG can reasonably be expected to be the favourites, here, but they’ve not been on quite the same world-beating form as they were when they won the International with their former roster. There’s a lot of potential for upset within this group: Fnatic have talent but middling results. Newbee have regained their TI4-winning carry, Hao, and are stronger as a result. Virtus. pro are consistently entertaining to watch—their run of 5th and 6th place finishes belies their potential to knock out top-tier teams from time to time.

Group B comprises Vici Gaming, Unknown. xiu, Vega Squadron, and OG. Vici are the powerhouses here, a relatively known quantity in terms of talent, experience, and results. These are the guys you watch if you want the best chance of seeing absolutely top-tier Dota from every single player. Unknown. xiu are, appropriately enough, relative unknowns. They are the first South American team to ever qualify for an official Dota event, having been very successful (and very entertaining) in their run through the qualifiers. If you’re looking for an underdog to cheer for, these are your best bet.

Vega Squadron’s dark horse status took a hit when they failed to qualify for the TI5 main event, but they rode right back into form with their surprise victory at ESL One New York. OG, meanwhile, represent a wildcard of a different sort: a mashing together of new talent and veterans, former teammates and strangers. It’s a reunion of N0tail and Fly from old-Fnatic, Fly and MoonMeander from the TI5 compLexity lineup, plus relative newcomers Miracle – and Cr1t-.

On the 13th, then, I’d recommend starting with Vici Gaming vs. Unknown. xiu—while there’s a risk that it’ll be a one-sided game, it encapsulates the broadest spread of experience and new talent.

November 14th: Group C and D

Group C comprises Team Secret, Newbee Young, LGD Gaming and Cloud9. Secret’s early fall was one of the big stories to emerge from TI5, but the subsequent roster change has worked out for them: they won MLG World Finals and Nanyang and came second at ESL One New York. They are, comfortably, the favourites to win this tournament. Newbee Young are less favoured: they’re relatively new, they haven’t played much outside of China, and they were a substitute for IG. LGD are better favoured with the post-TI5 addition of rOtK rounding out a talented squad. Cloud9, meanwhile, having undergone a dramatic shift since TI5, releasing their entire roster and becoming a fully North American rather than mostly-European team.

Group D comprises EHOME, Alliance, CDEC and Mineski. EHOME have lost rOtK to LGD since TI5 but have done well since, picking up 3rd place in Nanyang. This is one of the oldest names in pro Dota, and they’re definitely back. Also back: Alliance, the TI3 champions whose knife-edge heartattack victory over NiP in the Euro qualifiers was one of the biggest moments in professional Dota this year. CDEC’s journey to the TI5 grand final was one of the stories of the year too, albeit something that they’ve not quite managed to replicate since. Mineski, finally, are the great hope for Filipino Dota at the event having proved themselves against SEA counterparts Fnatic in the qualifiers.

On the 14th, I’d recommend starting with either EHOME vs. Alliance (to confirm whether or not ALLIANCE ARE DOING IT) or Secret vs. Newbee Young, as it’s an underdog-overdog matchup similar to Vici and Unknown. For me, Alliance vs. EHOME clinches it on a very important metric: silly pro player names. EHOME’s new lineup includes ‘old chicken’, while Alliance have been having a lot of success with ‘Mynuts’. If you would like to hear a professional commentator bellow something like ‘old chicken is ALL OVER Mynuts’, then this is your best chance to do so. And that, when it comes down to it, is what professional gaming is all about.

Leviathan, the Tidehunter, is a melee strength hero who is formidable due to his uncommonly tough hide and his ocean spells that sweep enemies upward. He can be played as a support or as an offlane hero whose greatest strengths lie in being able to take heavy amounts of damage in the early game and the disabling powers of his spells.

Though he does not deal especially high damage at any point in the game, his spells can have a devastating effect on the enemy without expending much mana. Dota 2 tidehunter scepter gas He is able to send forth a spray of water to slow down the enemy retreat and his outrageous ultimate, Ravage, throttles enemies in a massive area around him. The durability of his Kraken Shell allows him to shrug off damage for absurd survivability against low damage attacks. Tidehunter’s ability to shrug off damage and his enormous strength gain makes him very durable, and the power of his spells means he is a tank the enemy very much needs to target.

  • Gush’s projectile travels at a speed of 2500.
  • Gush first applies the debuff, then the damage.
  • When upgraded, Gush releases a big wave, instead of a single target projectile. The wave always travels its full distance.
    • When targeting a unit, the wave is released towards its direction on cast. However, it does not home in on the target.
    • The wave travels at a speed of 1500 instead of 2500 like the non-upgraded projectile, taking 1.47 seconds to travel the full distance.
    • The wave can hit units up to 2460 range away (travel distance + radius).
    • The wave fully affects invisible enemies and enemies inside the Fog of War.
    • Provides 200 radius ground vision around each hit enemy for 2 seconds.
    • The wave does not provide any vision.
    • The second sound is used by the wave.
  • Damage block stacks with passive melee damage block.
  • The damage reduction is Damage Block and the debuff removal is a strong dispel.
  • The damage reduction is always on and is not connected to the damage threshold for debuff removal.
  • The Damage Block does not work against wards ( Plague Ward , Mass Serpent Ward , Death Ward ).
  • Does not reduce physical damage from spells, except from Moon Glaives and The Swarm .
  • Only damage from player owned sources (after reductions) is counted towards the debuff removal.
  • Damage counter for the debuff removal resets when Tidehunter does not take player based damage for 6 seconds.
  • It can’t dispel those deal damage before debuff, since it applies dispel on damage but not after the whole effect.
  • A debuff removal proc is indicated by a sound effect and water particles on Tidehunter’s skin.
  • The tentacles travel at a speed of 725.
  • Hit units are knocked up 350 range for the initial 0.5 seconds of the stun.
  • While in the air, other units may pass below hit airborne units.
  • The damage is applied upon landing, not upon getting hit.
  • Ravage’s effect is caused by a 250 units wide ring, which expands around the cast location at the given speed.
    • This means units within 250 radius upon cast are hit instantly.
    • The ring takes exactly 1.38 seconds to cover the remaining distance.
    • It also means that it is possible to evade the effects by blinking inside the expanding ring shortly after cast.

Fnatic at The International

There has been a lot of discussion over the last 24 hours regarding our requirement that Fnatic plays with Era at The International, and how it differs from Fear’s substitution in Evil Geniuses. In cases like this, we think being fully transparent is the right approach. Hopefully this sheds some light onto the situation for everyone.

New Team Matchmaking

Team matchmaking is now a part of ranked matchmaking, meaning the pool of available opponents for teams and full parties is now much larger. To play as a team, form a party of five players. If there is a team roster that contains all members of your party, you will then be presented with the option to play using that team’s identity. Choosing to use a team identity means it will be displayed in game, and matchmaking will use that team’s MMR. If you choose not to use a team identity, you’ll simply play as an ordinary group of five players.

Teams will be preferentially matched with other teams, however they may also be matched with a party of five that is not using a team identity.

We’ve also made it easier to coordinate with friends to play as a team by increasing the maximum team roster size to seven members. However, keep in mind that any roster change will result in the recalculation of the team’s MMR based on the ranking of each team member.

To make way for this new approach to ranked Team Matchmaking, we have cleared the MMRs of all existing teams. Teams will enter MMR calibration when they play their next game.

Finally, the participation requirements, available game modes, and abandonment rules for team matchmaking are now the same as ordinary ranked matchmaking.

In Compendium news, two stretch goal rewards have been released. The 1v1 Practice Mode lets you find a short match to practice your mid lane against different matchups. With the Favorite Hero Challenge, some new analysis tools have been added to help you track your performance.

The Path to The Dota 2 Championship

Heroes are also able to spend gold to purchase items.

Spawning [ edit ]

All heroes spawn once at the beginning of the match after the picking phase, but only if the player locked in their pick.

The only heroes which spawn later on are hero clones, which can only be created by 3 heroes: Meepo , who can gain up to 4 permanent clones of himself by leveling Divided We Stand , which all die together when any of them dies (including the prime Meepo), Arc Warden , who can create a temporary clone of himself by casting Tempest Double , which expires like a regular summon, and Monkey King , who can create an army of temporary clones with Wukong’s Command , which are uncontrollable and only attack heroes. Like heroes, these clones do not disappear when dying (or expiring). Meepo’s clones respawn like regular heroes, while Arc Warden’s and Monkey King’s clones respawn whenever Tempest Double or Wukong’s Command is cast again. These hero clones are almost fully treated like regular heroes, with a few special interactions with some spells for fairness. However, since Meepo’s clones and Arc Warden’s clone work fundamentally differently (Meepo clones being permanents like heroes, and death to one means death to all, while Arc Warden’s clone is rather similar to a summon or an illusion), each have different unique interactions. Monkey King’s clones rather act like a spell effect and cannot be interacted with in any way. They stand at set locations and attack nearby enemy heroes automatically until the spell expires.

Illusions are also hero-type units, but unlike heroes, they do not respawn, but despawn completely after dying, like other units and summons. Each spell which creates illusions spawns completely new illusions on recast. Illusions are basically hero-based summons, copying the hero, but acting like a summon.

Killing and dying [ edit ]

Killing a hero grants players much bigger bonuses than killing almost any other unit. Heroes grant scaling gold based on their level and their current killing streak, and scaling experience based on their level. Heroes also gain killing streaks upon killing heroes. A killing streak increases the hero’s bounty, increasing its value for the enemy. A killing streak starts with 3 hero kills without any deaths in-between, and is capped at 10 kills. A streak longer than 10 has the same worth as a 10 killing streak. A hero’s current streak is globally announced whenever it makes a kill.

Streak length Streak name Streak value
0, 1, 2 N/A N/A 0
3 Player is on a 60
4 Player is dominating 120
5 Player is on a mega Kill streak 180
6 Player is unstoppable! 240
7 Player is wicked sick 300
8 Player is on a monster kill streak 360
9 Player is GODLIKE 420
10+ Player is beyond GODLIKE , someone kill them!! 480
Announcer responses are customizable

The very first hero kill of the match, called the First Blood! , also grants an additional gold 150 to the killing hero. A hero’s bounty uses the following formula:

100 + streak value + (hero level × 8) (+ first blood)

A hero is only granted this gold if it actually killed the enemy (i. e. did killing blow). Otherwise, the hero either only gets assist gold and experience, or no gold and experience at all, based on how much time passed since the last time it damaged the target, and how far away the hero is if too much time passed.

Killing a hero also grants experience based on the hero’s level. Up to level 5 the experience bounty grows by 20 per level, starting at 100 on level 1 and reaching 180 on level 5. From level 6 and onward, each level increases the experience bounty by 100, starting with 280 on level 6, reaching 2180 on level 25. Although a hero can level up to 30, the experience bounty maxed out at level 25.

Killing multiple heroes in quick succession also results in a multi-kill. However, unlike a killing streak, a multi-kill has no gameplay influence and merely serves for aesthetics. Multi-kills do not require the hero to stay alive in-between the kills, if the hero dies, the multi-kill can still continue. A multi-kill occurs when killing a second hero within 18 seconds of the first kill. The multi-kill can be extended by killing even more heroes, all within 18 seconds of the previous kill. Like a killing streak, a multi-kill has no limit, but is “soft-capped” at 5, repeating the same line for 5 and more kills. The multi-kill stages are:

Kills Announcement Announcement with killing streak
1 N/A N/A N/A
2 Player got a double kill! . with a double kill!
3 Player has a TRIPLE kill! . with a TRIPLE kill!
4 Player earned an ULTRA KILL! . with an ULTRA KILL!
5+ RAMPAGE. . RAMPAGE.
Announcer responses are customizable

A hero’s death has a much bigger impact than the death of almost any other unit. When a hero dies, it stays dead for an amount of time based on its level and the player loses gold based on the player’s current net worth divded by 40. There is no way to directly reduce or avoid this gold loss. However, only unreliable gold is lost, reliable gold is not lost on death, meaning if a hero has almost no unreliable gold but a lot of reliable gold, dying does not cost as much as it would with much unreliable gold and little reliable gold. Dying also results in the loss of any ongoing killing streak the hero has. Heroes do not lose experience on death. As mentioned before, a death also grants gold and experience to nearby enemies and the killer. However, gold and experience is only granted to the enemy, and streaks are only lost when dying to an enemy.

Dying to neutral creeps, or getting denied by an ally or oneself neither grants the enemy any bounty, nor ends the current killing streak. Dying to a neutral creep results in a minimum death time of 26 seconds.

A table showing how much gold a hero grants and loses on death can be found here. A table showing how much experience a hero grants on death can be found here.

Respawning [ edit ]

After the first spawn, a hero does not spawn again. However, what heroes do instead is respawning. After a hero dies, it comes back to life after an amount of time based on its level. The maximum respawn time is reached on level 25. Upon respawning, the hero gets instantly moved to the fountain area, with its health and mana reset. Cooldowns are unaffected and buffs and debuffs are not cleared upon respawning.

Several abilities and items are able to affect the respawn timer and the respawn location.

Clockwerk/Lore

Rattletrap descends from the same far-flung kindred as Sniper and Tinker, and like many of the Keen Folk, has offset his diminutive stature through the application of gadgetry and wit. The son of the son of a clockmaker, Rattletrap was many years apprenticed to that trade before war rode down from the mountains and swept the plains villages free of such innocent vocations. “Your new trade is battle,” his dying father told him as the village of their ancestors lay in charred and smoking ruins.

It is a poor tradesman who blames his tools, and Rattletrap was never one to make excuses. After burying his father among the ruins of their village, he set about to transform himself into the greatest tool of warfare that any world had ever seen. He vowed to never again be caught unprepared, instead using his talents to assemble a suit of powered Clockwerk armor to make the knights of other lands look like tin cans by comparison. Now Rattletrap is alive with devices—a small but deadly warrior whose skills at ambush and destruction have risen to near-automated levels of efficiency. An artisan of death, his mechanizations make short work of the unwary, heralding a new dawn in this age of warfare. What time is it? It’s Clockwerk time!

I usually play him as a support so I’d go meka, Medallion of Courage. those two items would guarantee you survivability and kill on the early games. its enough to dominate people if you play it right.

I like Visage too, but he is in my opinion very difficult to play correctly.

– you have to keep your stacks of armor in mind, if you don’t, you’ll probably die
– you have to keep the charges of your damage thingy in mind. if you don’t, you’ll either waste charges or waste the spell
– you have to keep in mind how charged up your gargoyles are and recharge them if necessary, to make sure their damage is high enough
– you also have to keep the health of your gargoyles in mind, and in general move them around effectively
– in addition you have to time the chain stun well. you not only have to guess where your opponent is going and activate the first gargoyles stun at the right moment in advance, but also have the second one nearby and time it too
– using your gargoyles to scout without losing them since otherwise you feed the opponents
– pay attention what to use your debuff on. whether it’s the fleeing guy to slow him, or the carry to weaken him, or whatever

And all that at once. oO And in addition, the game ain’t saving the hotkeys for the gargoyles. If I save one gargoyle to number key 2, and the other to 3, and I resummon them, both are at 2. Quite annoying.

I like him, the model looks great, the abilities are interesting, but right now I don’t think I can play him effectively or spend the time to learn it. 🙂
