D2L Season 2
Playoff Preview

With so many leagues drawing to a close these days, it would be easy to miss something like D2L. It’s been chugging along for a while now, and after months of league play we’re just entering the playoffs. Empire, Liquid, Dignitas, and Fnatic. EU are in the running for the $5000 first place prize, and with these four teams there you can rest assured that competition is going to be fierce.

TL writer Tephus has a quick League Recap for those of you who missed the regular season, and a Playoff Preview to get you excited for the double elimination style playoff bracket that will be played out soon.

Finally, by popular demand, we have a Playoff Poll. Vote for who you think will face each other in the finals, and then come back on game day to boast about your Dota 2 clairvoyance. Called it!

League Recap

By Tephus

With the last game having been played a few weeks ago, and the league taking place over a four month period (and three separate balance patches), fans may wish to brush up on how the final teams came to be.

Featuring the top teams from the EU and NA regions, the group stage ended extremely tightly, including a three way tie. Due to the limited number of final qualifying spots, numerous high tier teams like No Tidehunter, Natus Vincere, and Virtus. pro were eliminated prior to the bracket stages. The D2L also saw the tragic fall of the mTw organisation and the disbandment of the remaining team, Redefining Madness, and possibly forecast the split of Team 3DMAX. On the other hand, the tournament started only days after Team Liquid was announced, and has been a great tournament to follow the team’s growth.

Empire claimed the top seed spot, impressively only dropping two matches in a pretty stacked league. With a three way tie in match scores between Dignitas, Fnatic. EU, and Team Liquid, the tie-breaking process was decided by total map wins and then by inter-team play. Let’s preview each team a little more in depth, going into the final bracket.

Playoff Preview

By Tephus

Empire

Empire are coming in fresh off of a disappointing showing in the Star Ladder finals on their home turf, managing just a single map win. On the other hand, just a couple weeks ago they took home first place in the CIS-only Techlabs Cup. These radical differences in play exemplify some of the inconsistency plaguing Empire over the past couple months. In The Defense, they came out of the group stages in first place, but did not manage to win a series in the large playoff bracket. Even their recent overall record shows this; they have only won 3 of their last 10, but the 15 games prior to that only include 2 losses.

Empire is clearly nowhere near showing the dominance they achieved a few months ago, and many people will attribute this to their recent roster shuffle. Moving Scandal to the offlane to make room for their famous fresh recruit, Vigoss, has also raised a few eyebrows. For Empire to see success here, Vigoss must once again display his historic ability to dominate a game, and all the other gears will need to return to their pre-shakeup form.

Fnatic

As recently as a month ago, Fnatic were in top form, displaying some of the strongest play in Europe. They won the DotaHut Invitational in convincing fashion, and came out undefeated in their The Defense groups. Even after their first round loss in The Defense, they managed to scrap their way through the loser’s bracket, only to lose in the finals by a single map. They are currently even holding on to second place in The Premier League.

Unfortunately, Fnatic have started to slip in the past month or so, dropping sets to top NA and EU teams. Most uncharacteristically, they were even eliminated early in the Ritmix RDL, not managing to win a single match. Luckily, their recent Achilles’ Heel of Virtus. pro, who has terrorized the squad by winning 5 of their last 6 meetings, will not be in attendance. They are also coming fresh off a second place finish in Starladder, perhaps a sign they are back in top form, and their poor results were only a blip. Also, with VP already out of the way, Fnatic may be able to cruise to a win here.

Team Liquid

Recently putting together an incredible winning streak, Liquid has received a lot of attention in the Dota world, but the last couple weeks has seen a few ups and downs. While they finished first in their group in the DreamHack Invitational, and are currently leading The Premier League, they didn’t manage a single win in their EMS One group. Most recently, they finished 4th (just out of the money) in Ritmix, and reached second place in the second Eizo Cup.

Liquid has a good chance of finding success here, assuming they continue to play at their best. While they are not in the middle of a 20 match win streak any longer, they have still been performing well, and come into the finals with a good record recently versus Fnatic and Empire.

Dignitas

While perhaps slumping over the past couple months, the return of Sneyking has appeared to revitalized the second NA Dota team in attendance, as Dignitas put on an extremely strong showing at the recent Ritmix Dota 2 League with a first place finish. Dignitas are also riding a seven match win streak into this event, which includes a win over their first round matchup Fnatic.

Should Dignitas continue to ride their current wave, they will be a scary opponent for any team coming against them. If for some reason some of the magic fades, they can still fall back on some very unique pocket strats which have earned them wins in the past.

Playoff Poll

Call the finals, and then come back here later so you can gloat about your amazing prediction skills!

Dota 2 Night Stalker Gu >

Share

One of the most feared gankers in the game, Balanar the Night Stalker is a strong hero that can dominate games during the night time. This night time period that makes him strong is his unique characteristic, to balance it out, he is very weak during the day time.

He is a very easy hero to play since he doesn’t require much farm early on and his skillset is pretty straightforward.

Night time comes for you!

Pros and Cons

  • + Very fast during the night
  • + Tanky due to high Str
  • + Spammable nuke that deals a good amount of damage
  • + Can get legal maphack (more on this later)
  • – Melee
  • – Single Target
  • – Loses a lot of his power during the day

For more help on Dota 2, read our Riki, Crystal Maiden and Axe Guide.

Dota 2 – Night Stalker Abilities

Void
Creates a damaging void that slows an enemy unit and deals damage. Void also mini-stuns, interrupting channeling abilities. The slowing effect lasts longer at night.

  • Day Duration: 2
  • Night Duration: 4
  • Move Slow: 50%
  • Attack Slow: 35%
  • Damage: 90/160/255/335
  • Cooldown: 8 seconds
  • Manacost: 80/90/100/110

Your main nuke, it has a ministun as well as a slow that lasts for either 4seconds during the night or 2 seconds if used during the day.

Cripling Fear
Night Stalker horrifies the target enemy Hero, causing it to miss attacks and become silenced. The effect lasts longer at night.

  • Day Duration: 3
  • Night Duration: 5/6/7/8
  • Day Chance to Miss: 10%
  • Night Chance to Miss: 40%

Your means to keep enemies with blinks, invisible and other kind of escape skills from running away .

Hunter in the Night
Night Stalker is in his element at night, attacking and moving with great swiftness.

  • Move Speed: 20%/25%/30%/35%
  • Attack Speed: 30/45/60/75

The passive that makes him very fast during night time.

Darkness
Night Stalker smothers the sun and summons instant darkness, so that he might use his powers at their fullest. When used at night, it extends night time by Darkness’ duration.

  • Duration: 25/50/80 seconds
  • Cooldown: 180/150/120

In trouble during the day? Cast it and it’s night again. Want to gank someone but it’s day? Just cast it. However, the optimal use is to just use it whenever it is night, since it will extend it. When Darkness is maxed, you can make the game go almost perma night by using it everytime cooldown is over.

Dota 2 – Night Stalker Skill Build

  1. Void
  2. Cripling Fear
  3. Void
  4. Hunter in the Night
  5. Void
  6. Darkness
  7. Void
  8. Hunter in the Night
  9. Hunter in the Night
  10. Hunter in the Night
  11. Darkness
  12. Cripling Fear
  13. Cripling Fear
  14. Cripling Fear
  15. Stats
  16. Darkness

This is the standard Night Stalker build. You max the Void for obvious reasons since it’s your main killing tool. You take a level of silence at level 2 for utility purposes and sometimes you can even get a kill with the short 3 seconds of silence during the day.

Hunter in the Night doesn’t do absolutely nothing during the day, but you take it at level 4 because night comes soon when you are level 5,6 or 7. Darkness is taken whenever possible since it will allow extending the night, as well as getting the extra speed when it’s day.

Night Stalker Recommended items

Starting: Gauntlet, Gauntlet, Branch, Branch, Salve, Tango
These starting items will give you some nice stats to get some last hits as well as giving extra hp.

Core: Boots of Speed, Magic Wand, Urn, Bottle, TP Scroll
These items are all you need to start the killing. They will take care of both your regen and mana needs. Urn is a very good item to pick since night time should grant you a lot of kills, keeping your Urn with lots of charges to heal yourself and your team, as well as using it offensively to damage enemies.

Boots Choice: either Phase Boots or Power Treads
His passive almost grants him max move speed, so the phase ability won’t boost you by much, but it will let you run without being blocked. The stats from treads are also nice and you can change them to int if you need some extra mana. Night stalker guide dota 2

Ultimately both are viable, his passive already grants him 75 attack speed so in the beginning you will want to complement it with more damage that phase gives, instead of attack speed that treads give. I recommend you try both several times and stick to which one you like the most.

Strong Extensions: Aghanim Scepter, Vanguard, Black King Bar, Armlet
These items will further boost your survivability. Scepter will give you unobstructed vision during the night time AKA the legal maphack. It gives you a vision with a radius even bigger than an Observer Ward. It will tell you if enemies are alone and all their offensive movements.

The only downside is that it only works during the night. Vanguard will give you some hp and the damage block will allow you to dive towers and take more hits. BKB to make you magic immune against stunners and disablers. Armlet will give you some cheap damage and hp, if you can use it.

Luxuries: Assault Cuirass, Basher, Heart of Terrasque
Assault will give you a lot of armor and attack speed, while also helping your team and lowering enemy armor. Basher is a nice addition after it because you will have a lot of attack speed that will grant you some bashes during the team fights.

Heart will make you very very hard to kill as well as giving you a ton of regeneration when outside fights.

Night Stalker Strategy Tips

In the beginning, either choose the solo mid, or go to the safe lane with a support since he is not a very strong laner. Aim for boots and urn before the first night.

Night Stalker should gank during the night and farm during day time. However don’t suicide during the night (pick your targets beforehand and account for missing heroes) and don’t take farm from your team’s carry.

The best counter for Night Stalker is a simple TP scroll, sometimes you can’t just use Void to start the gank or enemies will just teleport away. Other times when you are killing people, their allies will try to teleport to counter your ganks.

Aghanim Scepter should be obtained in almost every game, it is THAT good. The only way you get caught out of position during the night is when you are answering the phone or something.

During the night you have a lot more vision than other heroes, so you can react faster to enemy presence than them can react to you. But the opposite is also true during the day since NS has very low sight.

Try not to prolong games too much, even if you can dominate the early game, at late game there are a lot of heroes that can take you on easily if they get farmed. Sometimes people playing Night Stalker get too overconfident and don’t realize that they can’t kill certain heroes anymore.

Complexity releases its entire Dota 2 roster

North America has at least one team that’s big-game hunting.

This article is brought to you by StatBanana, the best Dota 2 strategy tool.

Complexity Gaming had a real shot at being a competitor in North American Dota 2 again, but those hopes quickly diminished as the season progressed and they couldn’t settle on a group of players.

Just a day after watching The International 2019 from home, Complexity has decided to clean house and release its entire Dota 2 roster in hopes of getting some better talent into the organization’s system.

Complexity Gaming on Twitter

It is with great appreciation that we announce the release of our Dota 2 roster today. We’d like to thank the team for this season and wish everyone the best moving forward. Over the next few weeks and months, we will be evaluating our options for the next DPC season.

Rotating players through an organization during the season is a good way to test what aspects of a roster work, but that also removes the chance for teammates to build chemistry together, which is something Complexity lacked.

After dealing with one of its young cornerstone players, Andrei ”Skem” Ong, making a racist comment against Royal Never Give Up at DreamLeague Season 10, Complexity put him on the inactive roster. That left the team in a bad place after the organization parted ways with then captain Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao and Jingjun “Sneyking” Wu right after that event.

Complexity hasn’t been known for its stable roster work in recent years since it let go of longtime captain Kyle “melonzz” Freedman in the middle of the 2017 season. Complexity has long been an organization full of stand-in players, trial contracts, and few core players who stick around for more than a few Majors.

Complexity Gaming on Twitter

For five years, @coL_Zfreek has been a rock for #COLDota, functioning as a crucial pillar of our Dota division. Zfreek is an exceptional person and player, and we look forward to when our paths cross again. Here are some of our favorite moments together. https://t. co/AtvgnrWFY9

This year was slightly different, though. They still had Zakari “Zfreek” Freedman on the roster to help lead the way and Linus “Limmp” Blomdin from that 2018 roster change. Following EE and the quick turnaround, Complexity held strong and eventually settled on the additions of Adam “343” Hussein and Galvin “Meracle” Jian Wen.

That roster performed well with a rotating fifth slot that saw both Yang “Deth” Wu Heng and NA-favorite Jaron “monkeys-forever” Clinton step in.

Right as the team began practicing for the TI9 qualifiers, they were able to secure the services of Otávio “Tavo” Gabriel after Chaos Esports Club officially disbanded the rest of its South American roster. Unfortunately for Complexity, they were soundly beaten by the former Forward Gaming roster, J Storm, beastcoast, and others at the qualifiers.

That ended their season abruptly, although they went on to finish fourth at Dota Summit 10. But that win wasn’t enough to satisfy the organization, so it officially announced that it’ll start with a clean slate for the 2019-2020 season.

After The International every year, teams who perform poorly or think they need to make changes to improve their roster begin shuffling their talent, leaving many good Dota players on the board. Complexity will have a good shot at picking up some talented players and making a run in NA next season if the organization plays its cards right.

Lycan dota 2 jungle

Dealing with Lycan

About a year ago, we highlighted the strengths of Lycan in 7.00 and for the hero it has only gotten better since. 7.07 introduced a variety of changes to attributes and regen. Couples with re-worked talents, Lycan feels stronger than ever, dominating pubs in every skill bracket with a standout win rate of almost 56% in the Very High Skill bracket. This success extends to the pro scene as well, where Lycan is getting picked more often with a win rate similar to his pubs.

How does one deal with Lycan?

Long range initiation & Hard Lockdown

Lycan is a very difficult hero to lockdown. His ultimate can be interrupted, but once he has successfully shapseshifted, Lycan cannot be slowed down, similar to Weaver in Shukuchi. As such, stuns will always be superior to slows against Lycan, especially longe-range AoE initiation spells. As important as it is to lockdown Lycan, it can be just as important to lockdown his army of minions, as they have the potential to hunt down supports by themselves.

Earthshaker is an obvious counter to Lycan. Not only does he have a long-range, AoE stun, Fissure can also be used to block off any escape paths, forcing Lycan at the very least to fight instead of taking flight. That fissure block can also be used to hold the highground against Lycan, blocking him and his army off from the tower. Echo Slam is of course the biggest counter to Lycan, as it turns his army against him. That said, Earthshaker is far from a strong support pick these days, but a lot of what he offers can be done with other supports as well.

Tusk’s Ice Shards function in a similar way to fissure, blocking off Lycan rather than locking him down. Snowball works as a long-range initiation and Walrus Punch is an additional ability to hold him down. While Frozen Sigil may not be able to slow down Lycan’s movement speed in Shapeshift, it does slow down his attack speed and that of his minions.

Axe deserves a special mention here as well. Berserker’s Call is an exceptional ability against a minion heavy pusher such as Lycan. Similarly, Elder Titan is a strong pick against Lycan as well, especially since ET’s aura makes Lycan more vulnerable to magic damage.

Another hero deserves a special shoutout here, despite not necessarily having hard lockdown. Brewmaster’s ultimate is very strong against Lycan, as he can throw the hero into the air for a prolonged time and can deal 1000 damage to Lycan’s summoned units. While he can’t instantly kill either he Necronomicons nor the level 4 Wolves, it does deal significant damage and makes it much easier to clean them up. Dispel Magic also has a 4 second cooldown only, allowing at least three uses in a fight, which is definitely enough to kill them.

Consistent Depush

The main aspect of Lycan’s strength is of course his ability to take towers with little effort and commitment. Apart from his Necrobook, he doesn’t have any big cooldown to play around, with Shapeshift not being an important ability when pushing.

In order to prevent him from pushing, heroes need to have long-range nukes, that don’t put them in a compromising position as Lycan can hunt down most supports. While the aforementioned examples all work as well, there are other heroes worth noting here, such as Winter Wyvern or Legion Commander. Both heroes have decently long-ranged depushing abilities and even have the added benefit of having a strong ultimate to pick off Lycan.

That said, Lycan players have started to adapt to this measure of dealing with him and a Pipe of Insight is a rather common pick-up among Lycan players. This doesn’t mean that any form of depush is pointless, but it means that a team usually needs more than just one or two abilities do deal with Lycan’s push.

“Ward his Jungle”

A running gag in the Dota 2 community is/was to answer “ward his jungle” whenever someone asked for advice in dealing with a certain hero. It originated in users’ quests to take down Lycan in pubs, as he could–back then–farm the jungle and come out much stronger than most could deal with. Nowadays, Lycan doesn’t farm the jungle much early on, but there are ways to deal with him that sound much easier on paper than they actually are. As with any carry, holding him down in the laning stage and cutting him off from any resources is a reliable way of dealing with him, though this is not an easy feat to accomplish.

What can be easy though is to pick heroes that simply push faster than him. Lycan, as good as his own push my be, cannot defend pushes at all. If you’re knocking on his tier 3, all he can do is respond with split push. His teamfighting capabilities are virtually non-existent, though Howl is a not to be underestimated buff in the nighttime and as mentioned above, Shapeshift does allow him to hunt down supports, even in teamfights.

Like any other pusher, Lycan is dependent on hitting certain timings. Delaying the first tower, the first Roshan and the first highground push even by a little can buy your team enough time to farm up necessary items. Not getting objectives will severely stifle his game impact, as he doesn’t farm as quickly as other carries.

No real item counters

Unlike most other carries, there is no seemingly easy item pick-up that will keep a support safe. Necronomicons can purge a Ghost Scepter or Eul’s Scepter of Divinity, while Force Staff or Glimmer Cape won’t be enough to get away from Shapeshift and/or the Necronomicon’s True Sight either. Generally speaking, Lycan will/should have a Necronomicon level 3 before a support can pick up a significant defensive item, making most of these purchases slightly useless. That said, just because he can counter these items, doesn’t mean it’s a waste to invest into them. Eul’s Scepter can still be effective of course, used aggressively to stop Lycan in his tracks and at least delay him from pursuing, much like Ghost Scepter can buy time to at least force the purge from the Necronomicon.

Aside from that, increasing one’s armor can be effective against Lycan, which is why Solar Crest is a good pick-up against him. Not only does it provide armor, it also gives Lycan and his minions as miss chance.

Conclusion

With Shapeshift active, Lycan is a much more obnoxious Slark. He can hunt people down and his high mobility can make it difficult to lock him down. Supports have a hard time holding their own against him and his ability to take objectives make it difficult to keep an item advantage over him. While there technically are a variety of ways to deal with him, there’s a reason why Lycan has such a high win rate in pub and pro play at the moment. The fact that there’s no item that straight up counters Lycan makes it difficult to adjust to a last-phase Lycan pick, especially since most, if not all counters that we outlined above rely on picking the right heroes.

But perhaps this is where pubs need to adjust their mentality going into a pub game. If Lycan isn’t banned out, then, much like pros, they need to preemptively pick heroes that have the ability to deal with him.

General DiscussionSimilar heroes case 1: Mirana vs Windranger

    Similarities
    Both have a nuke
    A strong stun
Both are squishy but have ways of surviving
    Ranged, obviously
Can be played in various roles

    Differences
One is agi, other is int
Ultimate, one is more for solokills and the other is teamwide invis. Both are good in different ways

Direct comparison of stats and abilities

    Starfall vs powershot
Starfall can be used in an AOE and does more damage than a direct powershot to the nearest person
Powershot can be used in a straight line and has much better range, and wr does not have to put herself in danger to hit it
I say its a tie, one is better than the other depending on the situation, this isn’t accounting for windranger being an int hero therefore having more mana to cast spells, just the numbers and situations the spell is used also aghanims will be discussed later

    Sacred arrow vs Shackleshot

Sacred arrow is less reliable than a shackle, granted its stun is longger and it cannot be blocked by linkens.
Shackle is better for me because of the reliability and potential to disable 2 people in a fight. I have to give this one to shackleshot

    Windrun vs Leap
Both can be used offensively and defensively but they are pretty different
Windrun is a devastating tool in the laning stage, also considering windrangers ability to harass, this however isn’t that viable anymore if the enemy has nukers who go through the evasion
Leap is near instant repositioning and as and ms buffs as well as well as the 3 charges make it versatile . But isn’t as powerful a laning tool as windrun
Again it’s a tie depending on the situation

    Moonlight shadow vs focus fire
One is better for initiating and map control which makes mirana viable in many different positions, and one is a death sentence to most heroes. Both can be used in a sense that you can pick off an enemy hero but Moonlight shadow has more utility most of the time

    Aghs
Windranger just takes this one, it just makes sense, max as and on such a low cd, as well as removing the damage penalty and it just takes this cake, double starfall just doesn’t fit miranas kit since this is for her nuker build that doesn’t see much action nowadays. It’s still a good aghs but Windrangers is a must have is shes a core

    Verdict
Mirana is a better offlaner in this dual lane meta, just because of her presence past laning. To be able to choose when to hop in and hop out to burst a support with starstorm is more reliable than the 3 seconds it takes for Windranger to kill someone and put herself in the fight. However Windranger is a better Mid in this 212 meta and with items she can shit on cores and supports alike easily. Also tower taking and snowballing is always a good thing. How I play her and have more success is an offlane support in 212 games, with her harass and the fact that she falls off around midgame anyway, this seems like a good way to shut down a safelaner and his supports if they’re not equipped to deal with you.

I know I’m a low tier archon scrub but I believe my observations are fair and infomed. I researched and played both heroes a fair ammount in different positions. I also watched higher teir streams and replays. I may not have mechanical skill and time to grind mmr, but I believe my game knowledge is at a “well informed” level. All I wish to accomplish with this post is to maybe share some observations because I love this game and these two heroes and I wish to talk about them. If some sad kids come to this thread and say “don’t talk unless you’re at least divine and 60% winrate” please, save your MMR eletism for TI9. I actually enjoyed writing this and am not imposing my knowledge or superiority, just my appreciation for the game. If people are interested enough I will write other hero comparisons.
