Dota 2 Chongqing Major in turmoil as casters protest controversial player ban

The Chinese government may not allow a Filipino Dota 2 pro to play after he made racist comments in-game.

Dota 2’s Chongqing Major event is facing ongoing controversy stemming from a racist comment made by a competitor in early November. The event is facing a potential caster protest and reported event cancellation following the past month’s events.

TNC Predator player Carlo “Kuku” Palad has reportedly been banned from competing in the upcoming Dota 2 Pro Circuit match. Dota 2 casters are suggesting a boycott of the event should Kuku be unable to play.

Kuku typed a racially-charged message—”ching chong”—into Dota 2’s game chat in early November. His message and Valve’s oversight upset the Chinese Dota 2 community. The message has racist implications tied to the Chinese language. Valve has since issued a late response and TNC Predator has since apologized and punished the player, issuing a 50 percent fine of his winnings from the Kuala Lumpur Major and 50 percent fine from either the Chongqing or Bucharest events. The money docked from Kuku’s share will be donated to an anti-racism charity. (TNC Predator won placed fifth in the Kuala Lumpur Major and won $60,000. It’s unclear how much counts as Kuku’s share.)

ESPN reported in late November that the municipal government of Chongqing banned Kuku from the event. TNC Predator has since affirmed the report, stating that the city government could cancel the Chongqing Major should Kuku attend—if he’s able to enter the country. The ESPN report suggested the Chinese ban could extend into The International 9 in Shanghai.

TNC Predator 🇵🇭 on Twitter

After talking to the organizers of the Chongqing Major, it was confirmed to us that the following may happen if Kuku will attend the Major: 1. He might not be able to enter the country 2. The city government will possibly cancel the tournament should he attend

Organizers of the event told TNC Predator that they are unable to “guarantee his safety” should he attend the event. TNC Predator reiterated that Kuku is not banned from the event by the tournament organizers. Valve reportedly told TNC Predator that it can compete at the Major with a stand-in player without the typical Dota 2 Pro Circuit points penalty. “This is the only response we have received from Valve,” TNC Predator wrote in a Twitlonger post.

“In light of this, TNC has yet to decide whether we will continue playing in the event,” the team wrote on Twitter. “For now, we are exploring all of our options.”

Chongqing Major broadcasting talent have begun pulling out of the event, should Kuku be unable to attend. Dota 2 caster Grant “GranDGranT” Harris posted to Twitter on Dec. 1 his intent to “refuse to cast.” Dota 2 commentator and host Paul “Redeye” Chaloner, who was not originally set to attend the attend, lent his support to Harris, too. “I do not agree with a local government placing restrictions on who can and cannot attend a Dota 2 tournament, in any country,” Chaloner wrote on Twitter. “I do not condone racism in any form. I believe the players have been punished suitably and deserve to be given chances to make amends.”

Andrei “skem” Ong is the other player implicated in early November. The compLexity player, who made racist comments during an official tournament match, was removed from compLexity Gaming’s active roster in mid-November. CompLexity is still attempting to qualify for the Chongqing Major through the Bucharest Minor event.

Dot Esports has reached out to Valve and tournament organizer StarLadder for more information. Valve has not publicly commented on the caster protest or TNC Predator’s statements. A representative from StarLadder declined to comment.

The Dota 2 Announcers we want to see

Today’s patch to Dota 2 has filled the hole in the Store that was announcer shaped, bringing with it Doctor Kleiner from Half Life, and a pair of Dota 2 appropriate announcers in Nature’s Prophet and Juggernaut. But this is hardly the end of it, and it’s not going to be surprising if other Valve characters start popping up all over the place, commenting on your minor failures, and critiquing your terrible use of Fissure in blocking off your entire team from a fight.
But which are the ones that will really get your blood fired up, make you commit just a little bit more to that teamfight, and land the kills that will turn the game around? We’ve had a bit of a think, and this is what we’ve come up with.

Valve Characters:

Administrator (Helen)

Team Fortress 2’s ubiquitous Announcer, and CEO of both RED and BLU, Helen has the kind of screech that spurs you into motion, even if you really wanted to stand still. You wouldn’t want to disappoint her, after all. Not when her repeated ‘Overtime!’ still echoes around your head when the sounds of the world drift away into silence.

The TF2 Pyro

While that gas mask does make it somewhat difficult to provide eloquent and constructive commentary on the unfolding of a Dota 2 match, that’s never really stopped the Pyro from trying its best to express itself. So why stop here? Gmphramph indeed!

Sample Quote: Grrmthphmpmth!

Father Grigori:

Of all Half Life 2’s characters, none are as bombastic and charasmatic as Father Grigori, the crazed priest who rules over Ravenholm’s chaos with a tenuous grasp, be a tenacious one. He offered brilliantly flowery and pseudo-religious commentary as Gordon cut a swathe through the zombies of that cursed town, so he should be well versed to offer a few words during that particularly brilliant multikill.

Sample Quote: Ultrakill! I bless the glory of thy greatness!

The G-Man

He remains a shadowy figure throughout all of the Half Life games, which means he should feel quite at home hovering out of sight over the top of your Dota 2 game. Whether he’ll be able to pay attention to some heroes mucking about on the field instead of dealing with all that mysterious, pressing business, though, we’re not quite sure.

Sample Quote: First…. blood. You’ve done a great.. deal.. in such a short span.

GLaDOS

This is a no-brainer, really. Beyond trying to kill you in a multitude of different ways, under a multitude of different excuses, all GLaDOS does is commentate on your inadequacies and failure to meet her expectations. Which should mean she’ll fit right in pointing out that you really should have placed that Black Hole better, or going Faceless Void is nevera good idea. Dota 2 kleiner announcer hall

Sample Quote: [Subject Name Here]’s Tower is under attack. [Subject Name Here]’s team must be so disappointed.

Cave Johnson

He’s just as disembodied as GLaDOS, but somehow friendlier, despite being more terse. Might be because he’s not trying to kill you nearly as much, or just that your accidental death is a result of unexpected test results, rather than homicidal AI tendencies. He motivates through the greater good of science, rather than fear for one’s life. You have to like that about an announcer.

Sample Quote: Dire’s Ancient is under attack. We’re done here

Boomer

While you might imagine that the reanimated corpse of an obese, hygenophobic man might not make the best commentator, the Boomer actually has a lot of astute observations about team composition, lane strength and when exactly it’s best to do Roshan. You just have to figure out how to decipher his series of burps and tummy rumblings into something intelligible, first.

Sample Quote: Brrmplegwap.

Non-Valve Characters:

Rucks (Bastion)

Supergiant are typically very protective of their characters, not wanting them to just slip into other games for cheap promos, but they’ve also stated that they’re huge fans of Dota 2, and the possibility of Rucks (Bastion’s Narrator) coming to Dota 2 is a distinct possibility. And how brilliant he would be.

Sample Quote: Kid gets a multikill. Ain’t no stopping him now.

The Milkman (Psychonauts)

Double Fine’s paranoid schizophrenic, Boyd Cooper is one of the most memorable characters in Psychonauts, and throwing him into the Dota mix to peddle his particular brand of paranoia can only make you more terribly anxious about every missing hero from the minimap, and even more wary of constant ganks.

Sample Quote: I am the Milkman, that first blood was delicious.

Mordin (Mass Effect)

Because if there’s anything Dota 2 needs, it’s a scientist to properly break down and analyse everything that’s going on. It’s pretty unlikely that we’ll see characters from non-independent developers showing up in Dota 2, but if we do, it’d be lovely to have a character as memorable and fun as Mordin providing a bit of commentary.

Sample Quote: Dire’s Courier has been killed. Sloppy. A waste. Could’ve done more.

HK-47 (Knights of the Old Republic)

Similarly, having KoToR’s famously acerbic and bloodthirsty Droid companion insulting you from on high as you flounder in mid can only inspire you to do better. Or crush your spirit and have you break down crying. But then that’s always a threat in Dota 2, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Sample Quote: Multikill! Suggestion: Play better, losing meatbag team.

Morte (Planescape: Torment)

He might have had some use in combat to bit the ankles of your enemies, but Mort mostly just filled the ‘talking head’ role in your party, commenting on pretty much everything that happened. It was almost tempting to shove him in your bag of holding just to shut him up, but then he’d come up with a line that made you laugh, and you’d keep him out for a little longer.

Sample Quote: Roshan has been slain by the Dire. You know, I’d rather like that Aegis. I could do with a new body.

Adam Jensen (Deus Ex: Human Revolution)

In between carefully manoeuvring unconscious bodies so that they’ll wake up with a face full of toilet, and stopping megalomaniac corporations from ruining the world, Adam Jension could pop over to Valve to commentate on a few Dota 2 matches, surely. Although he’s a man of few words, so I’m not sure if he’d have all that much to say, even if he did find his way into a soundproof booth.

Sample Quote: I never asked for this.

Believe it or not, there is more to TI6 than watching Dota for 12 hours a day. There’s eating, sleeping, but also things to do outside KeyArena. It’s a congregation of fans, from all over the world, connected by the common language of Dota, who are here to celebrate not only their favorite teams, but also their love for the game.

These first two days of TI have been some of the most intense opening days of any International. It’s been a day of upsets. Usually, there is some time to take a break from the marathon of game watching—to eat, mingle, and breathe and comprehend what just happened in that OG vs. TNC series. If the pace of the first two days are any indication, there won’t be much time for a breather. While some can sustain the day long immersion of Dota in KeyArena, for everyone else there are a few outside activities that are worth taking a look.

Outdoor Viewing Area

The energy inside KeyArena has been incredible these first two days, but sometimes fresh air is nice. The outdoor viewing area is open to everyone, to families, curious onlookers, ticketless fans, but there were also attendees who just needed a break and a patch of grass. Food trucks outside offer a brief reprieve from concession stands of hot dogs, fries, and taco bowls. The nearby trading area is a great place to exchange emoticharms. The lawn is a great opportunity to meet and talk with people, who you’re no longer shouldered against, outside the darkness of the arena. Key arena seattle dota 2

The VR Booth

The VR booth above the secret shop

Gabe Newell, Valve’s founder, during the opening ceremony talked about how he has been spending most of his time with the Virtual Reality team, telling the crowd “If you have a chance, go check it out, and let me know at gaben@valvesoftware. com what you think.” The azure VR Booth can be found next to the outdoor viewing area, behind the Secret Shop. There you can demo the HTC Vive headset with games like Hover Junkers and Space Pirate Trainer. Dota fans would be more interested in being able to experience a game in virtual reality, via Valve’s Dota 2 VR Hub. Players can embed themselves on the battlefield, walk around among creeps and heroes, or hover feet above, like a drone. The schedule for the VR booth gets booked pretty quickly, as people are already lining up at 9AM (they open at 10AM) to make their appointments. There is a stand-in line, however, to grab the empty slots from no-shows.

The Autograph Area

Tuesday’s celebrity lineup

This year, there’s a new process to streamline the process of getting an autograph with Dota talent. You pick up a token to come back for the line two hours later. It’s like getting a Fast Pass at Disneyland. It segments the crowd of autograph seekers into discrete time slots, preventing the glut that can occasionally happen, especially this year when digital autographs (you’ll receive a gem that can inscribe an autograph) can net a sizable profit on the Steam market.

The Hall of Heroes

If last year’s technological breakthrough was projection mapping, then this year it’s augmented reality. It’s a familiar concept for anyone who is aware of Pokemon Go (or anyone who has internet). The resulting effect shows Dota heroes projected right on the stage. To clarify, it’s not a holographic projection, but a post, digital effect shown for stream viewers and on the monitors in the arena. Key arena seattle dota 2 These effects have been reserved for the main stage and the analyst panel, but at the Hall of Heroes, fans can meet with augmented reality versions of heroes of their choice. It’s all connected to your Steam account, so the hero you choose will also have your cosmetics. It can be a little awkward to pose and interact next to thin air, using the monitor to gauge the space where you and the augmented reality hero is, but don’t worry, it’ll all be fixed in post.

By just sheer game time, we’ve recorded close to 16 hours of Dota over the past two days. That doesn’t count the downtime between games, between series, and analysis and commentary. There’s four more days of Dota, and attendees should find ways to stretch their legs and enjoy as much of TI6 as possible.

The Best Hardware for Dota 2: Keyboards, Mice, and Monitors

Whether you’re looking to raise your MMR or you play Dota for fun and you’re in need of new gear, it’s easy to find peripherals out there that promise to enhance your gaming performance. If you’re not sure where to begin, we’ve put together a useful guide to help you find the best hardware for Dota 2.

Best Mechanical Keyboards for Dota 2

Mechanical keyboards are almost universally preferred by gamers. Unlike membrane keyboards, a mechanical keyboard offers a pleasant tactile experience and, even more importantly, ensures that every keystroke is actuated by the same amount of pressure each time. Membrane keyboards are unreliable at best, and while they might be acceptable for work and casual gaming, you’ll quickly leave them to gather dust once you’ve had a chance to try out a good mechanical keyboard.

There are plenty of excellent mechanical keyboards out there, but we’re partial to the Logitech G Pro Keyboard, especially for Dota. Dota 2 pro gamer mouse reviews If the $129.99 price point of the Logitech G Pro scares you off, we’ve also had good experiences with mechanical keyboards from Corsair and SteelSeries, many of which are slightly cheaper.

If you need to be selective about which peripherals you’re upgrading, a mechanical keyboard should be a top priority for most Dota players.

Best Gaming Mice for Dota 2

Finding a gaming mouse you like can be quite a personal thing. One person’s dream mouse might feel weird and uncomfortable in the hands of someone else. Most professional Dota 2 players prefer lightweight optical mice, but if you’re struggling to find space on the keyboard for your hotkeys, there are models out there that include up to 20 side-buttons. While DPI settings are, again, a matter of personal preference, you want to make sure you’re getting a mouse that has a wide range of native DPIs. Don’t be fooled into thinking that a higher DPI is automatically better — at the end of the day, DPI is mostly a number used by manufacturers for marketing purposes, and there is no ‘ideal’ DPI. Many Dota 2 players prefer to play at 400 or 800 DPI, and these are the native settings on many gaming mice.

The Logitech G Pro Gaming Mouse was our favorite peripheral of 2016, and it’s perfect for Dota 2. Other trustworthy manufacturers of gaming mice include Zowie, Corsair, and Razer.

Best Monitors for Dota 2

When it comes to monitors, it’s all about speed. Games of Dota are won or lost because of split-second interactions, and the input lag of standard work monitors can place an artificial cap on your skills as a player. Finding a monitor with a low response time is essential, and check out the specs of any model you’re looking to make sure that you’re buying a product with a response time lower than 5ms.

The refresh rate of a given monitor is another key factor to take into consideration. While having a 144hz monitor isn’t essential in Dota the same way it is in CS:GO, it’s a massive quality-of-life upgrade.

Accurate color reproduction is not so important for gaming so the panel type doesn’t matter quite so much. There are a few monitors on the market, like the Asus AG279Q, that combine all these feature on an IPS panel, but they’re not cheap.

Finding the best hardware for playing Dota isn’t easy, and a lot of it will come down to personal preference. We recommend going to a physical store and trying out products in person before making a purchase. The best hardware isn’t cheap, but if you’re able to sniff out good deals, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Why can’t non-tradable items received as gifts become tradable after being crafted?

Title. I understand that people would create new accounts and abuse the gifts if they were made tradable, but why continue the restriction on items that are crafted from the gifts? Since the gift items cannot be traded or marketed (which is totally justified), the only use I see for the gifts (for most people) is crafting. Crafting cannot be abused as they require recipes (augment, polymorph, etc) and other items as well and the results are entirely random. I think it is rather stupid to make a crafted item not tradable because only one item used in its making was non-tradable. In fact, removing the not-tradable part from crafted items may even boost economy through the purchase of recipes for crafting.

For example, I polymorphed my pig, and two other common ‘mythicals’ I got (one after a game and one from trading), and I got a Snowl. I honestly do not care for the Snowl as I already have my unusual courriers that I use, but I know many other people would like it and I might like their items. I think it is kinda stupid that I cannot trade it with people who will like it and use it more than I do and that I cannot receive anything for it either.

Bump! Was my suggestion really that bad? Or is this forum really inactive? I haven’t gotten 1 reply -_-

removing those also make new smurf accounts. more untouched steamids that cant be deleted if not reported. more name user taken because half a million account abuse the free gifts

You do realize that you need recipes for crafting right? And on top of that 4-6 items are becoming one after crafting. I feel you did not even bother to read what I wrote. If millions of account get opened to receive free items for crafting, then millions more recipes will be purchased (the ancient scroll and their keys) and people will invest more hours into gameplay.

Besides, the abuse of gifts through opening smurf accounts could have been tackled differently rather than just making the items untradeable (even after they are crafted into different items). For example, they could have given the gifts only to accounts that were at least a month old at the time the gifts were received. So opening smurf accounts would not give anything. Or they could have given the first gift to accounts when those said accounts reach a certain level like 40 or something, which would force those smurfs to actually invest a good amount of gameplay on these accounts. Making the gift untradeable even after they are crafted into some other items is poor design, pure laziness, and a great hindrance to crafting (and all the economic benefits it would have brought).

On another note, why are greevils uncraftable? They are totally useless and crappy looking unless they have unusual essence (and you can’t really change that for greevils that already hatched. )

You can use those gift for chisel and hammer recipe ingredient you can use for your own item inside inventory right?
Already got free item now still want to complain.

Of course gifts are nice, and everyone loves them but why attach them to conditions when there are easier ways to deal with abuse? Also, I am not complaining, just discussing and suggesting (so don’t put words in my mouth). I am not even talking about hammers, or tags, or none of that. I am talking about equipment gifts that are received and are non tradeable. The only use these have (for most people) is crafting, and unfortunately items that result from crating those gifts become untradeable as well (even if only one untradeable gift was used in the whole crafting process). Since many people have poor reading and comprehension abilities, let me make it as clear as I can. I am just suggesting to make it possible to trade items CRAFTED from gifts (NOT the actual gifts themselves). Or I am suggesting to make gifts tradable but make them available only to regularly used accounts that have reached a certain level. Making gifts non tradeable and leaving it at that, is simply poor design and decreases the potential of a bigger crafting market.

Or, you know, to put them on heroes? The entire fucking point of cosmetics in the first place?

So if you don’t like an item, you should force yourself to equip it? Or just leave it in a corner forever? No one can suggest to include them in bigger crafting possibilities? You know the entire fucking point of this thread.

They are tutorial items for people who don’t know what cosmetics are, so yes, these untradable items will be equipped for new players to show how it’s done and what changed.
Stop being a greedy bastard by wanting your free items to become tradable somehow. They are shit anyway. And stop being gullible – only an idiot would open scroll cases for recipes. they are 0.03€ on the market, so your whole trickle-down idea is flawed.

Tutorial items that show people what cosmetics are? That’s your argument? And what about the gifts you obtain afterwards that are still not tradable? This argument is so empty I won’t even waste time on it.

And again I am NOT asking for the GIFTS to be tradable. Read posts before you start calling people greedy bastards. I am asking for resulting items CRAFTED from the gifts to be tradable so that it offers people a choice of doing something with the gifts they do not like. I am actually surprised how many people are opposed to an idea that give them more freedom. Also, you must be the idiot (who have absolutely no knowledge of crafting and trading) if you think people don’t open scroll cases. If scrolls did not yield anything, Valve would not create them now would they? Do you know how wanted augment item recipes are (particularly augment uncommon recipe). Even if scrolls were useless as you said, does that not mean that they should be given more usefulness? (which my idea provides).

Also, chests are sold for $ 0.01, so going by your logic, no one should be opening them right? Did you see now how ridiculous this sounds? I just sold 3 old chests (wd, bh, etc) within a month of putting them on steam. Before calling my ideas flawed, maybe you should read over your “arguments”. EDIT: If you are talking about recipes being sold for only 0.03 euro, you should type recipe in the market page and look for yourself.

Shanghai Major invites are out: Eight teams receive direct invite

Update: The rolling release of the direct invites has started

First invite: OG is the first invite revealed on Valve’s official Winter Major website.

Perhaps the most predictable direct invite for the Winter Major, OG were the champion of the Fall Major at Frankfurt last November. Followed by a 1st place at Dream League Season 4 and a 2nd place at The Defense 5, OG’s invite is well-deserved. OG sure look to repeat their success at Shanghai.

Second invite: Team Secret’s direct invite was nothing surprising, for they have always been a formidable force in the scene.

Winning MLG World Finals as well as Nanyang Dota 2 Championships, the team looked incredibly strong coming into the Frankfurt Major. There, they managed to place second, losing only to OG in the grand finals. Puppey and co. surely aim nothing but a championship this time!

Third invite: Evil Geniuses is the third team being directly invited, which is also a bit of a no-brainer.

The American squad, following their championship at The International 5, has consistently managed to place high in premier tournaments. They came third at the Frankfurt Major and first at The Summit 4. EG seem to find their footing very quickly after replacing Kurtis ‘Aui_2000‘ Ling for Artour ‘Arteezy‘ Babaev.

Fourth invite: EHOME is another direct invite for the Shanghai Major. They achieved a respectable standing at The Frankfurt Major, placing 4th.

Most recently, they won the Dota 2 Radiant and Dire Cup 2015, having beaten CDEC in the grand final. A great mix of veteran and young blood under the leadership of Zhi Cheng ‘LaNm‘ Zhang, EHOME is a strong contender for the upcoming Major.

Fifth invite: Vici Gaming is the second Chinese team getting a direct invite.

With the addition of Xu ‘BurNing‘ Zhilei, VG came second at the Nanyang Dota 2 Championships and 5-6th at Frankfurt Major 2015. With the recent 2-0 defeat at the hands of Virtus. Pro* at The Summit 4, the squad placed 3rd in the tournament. VG is expected to carry their consistent form into the Winter Major.

Sixth invite: CDEC Gaming is another Chinese team that has received Valve’s direct invite.

The International 5’s runner-up has had quite a good run since September. With the same roster, they achieved joint 3-4th place at MLG World Finals and 5-6th place at The Frankfurt Major. Most recently, the team placed first at ECL 2015 Dota 2 Autumn. CDEC will look to repeat their magical run at TI5 in Shanghai.

Eighth invite: The Alliance is the final direct invite for the Shanghai Major. The recent win at World Cyber Arena surely played the crucial role as Alliance was without a major LAN victory in 18 months prior to it. Placing first secured the Swedish squad a direct invite and the invite will surely be a huge boost in morale for the team, after the returning of Jerry ‘EGM‘ Lundkvist. The Alliance is back!

*Update: The lists of teams competing for Regional Qualifiers are also announced:

Each region consists of two round robin groups of five teams. The top two teams from each group will advance to a double elimination bracket. The winner and runner-up of each region will be invited to The Shanghai Major.
