Recently we’ve seen some players experiencing significant network issues across multiple regions, in particular US East and Europe West. We thought we’d take a moment to update you on what we’ve been doing in this space, because it’s such an important issue.
These kinds of problems generally stem from either limited server capacity or poor network connectivity. In this case, the problems are entirely connectivity related, and they come in three different forms – two of them are related to DDoS, and one is ISP connectivity.
The first, DDoS attacks on an entire data center for a region, are particularly problematic because they saturate the entire connection into the data center. This is a very recent type of attack that has been plaguing a variety of high profile games. It causes players to freeze up or drop entirely because as their network packets reach the data center, the link has no room to accept them and they are dropped. In the short term we are forced into being reactive to these attacks on a case by case basis, while building out a long term infrastructure to bring better stability and protection.
The second, directed attacks on a single server, is one that we’ve released various fixes for over the past month. These attacks largely targeted pro players or tournaments. The primary problem in those cases was the ability for an attacker to pinpoint the exact IP address of the target game server, which allowed them to successfully attack it with a small set of resources. We’ve recently updated Dota 2, Dota TV servers, and Steam itself to better protect that IP address. We have also improved the local lobby system so it can function as a better fail safe for tournaments, in case the IP address leaks out through other means, such as human error or third party software.
The third, network connectivity issues, result in some players having continuous networking problems between their ISP and our game servers. For quite a while this has been most visible in the South East Asia and South America regions, but does exist with other ISPs around the world. Finding the right solution with every region, and its local ISPs, requires us to have more detailed data on exactly why our players are experiencing these issues. So, this week we’ve finished implementation of a more advanced network monitoring system that will automatically gather much deeper connectivity data from all our players.
Good networking connectivity is a requirement for a good Dota 2 experience. While we work on the core problem, we’re also working on reducing its effects – this week’s update includes improved detection of Poor Network Conditions. Previously, our detection algorithm was only triggered when multiple players completely lost connection to the game server. This new algorithm will now monitor the actual quality of the server’s connection to its players, and trigger in the case of poor connectivity for multiple players. Matches flagged as having Poor Network Conditions will be immediately safe to leave, and won’t record their results.

Or je me confronte а plusieurs soucis.
Le premier il est parfois impossible de lancer Steam quand on est pas connectй а Internet. Un йcran de chargement apparaоt mais bloque et Steam plante.
Le second est que certains jeu (comme Dead Island) me disent que Steam est obligatoire pour y jouer.
J’aimerais savoir si je suis seul а кtre confrontй а ces problиmes et si vous pouviez tйmoigner votre tips.

il parait que c’est normal pour dead island, les devs n’ont pas mis l’option jouer en йtant off line. Y as des jeux qui permette de jouer avec un steam hors connection, je joue a fallout 3 news vegas sans кtre connectй a steam.
je n’est aucun problиme avec steam au dйmarrage mкme sans connections, j’ai un message qui apparaоt pour me demander si je met en hors ligne ou si je quitte.

Je me suis retrouvй dans la mкme situation cet йtй (oщ j’avais Internet au travail en wi-fi mais pas dans ma collocation), ce que j’ai retenu :
– J’ai eu 3-4 soirs oщ je n’ai pas pu lancer Steam en mode offline chez moi (mкme chose que ton premier problиme), а chaque fois, Steam йtait en mode Online au moment oщ j’avais йteint le PC en quittant le travail, forcйment en rentrant chez moi il ne la retrouvait plus et refusait de se lancer (en gros, le message d’erreur me disait que Steam йtant en mode “Hors-connexion”, il йtait impossible de lancer . le mode “Hors-connexion”, va comprendre) ; – Jamais eu de soucis avec le mode Offline quand je l’ai activй en forзant Steam а redйmarrer en mode Offline alors que mon PC йtait encore connectй au net, il doit sans doute vйrifier 2-3 trucs avec les serveurs de Valve avant d’autoriser la chose donc faut anticiper la coupure ; – Зa dйpend peut-кtre des jeux mais de par mon expйrience, il faut d’abord lancer une premiиre fois le jeu (et le voir rйinstaller pour la 100e fois directx / c++ machin) en йtant connectй pour qu’il puisse кtre utilisable en mode Offline, je confirme que FNV marche impec en Offline, j’ai passй les 3/4 de mes soirйes dessus

Effectivement, rien de plus rageant que de vouloir se faire une petite partie et de constater que steam vous lвche au dйmarrage, faute de connexion. La solution coule de source : Garder systйmatiquement steam en mode non connectй hormis pour patcher tes jeux une а 2 fois par mois.
Personnelement c’est ce que je fais et ne m’en porte pas plus mal. Ainsi, connexion foireuse ou pas, plus de mauvaise surprise.

Although the Courier changes don’t exactly make it is easier to get your items out, the fact that everyone has one now makes things a little more hectic.
Here is a breakdown for several of the changes made to the Courier in the Outlanders Update for patch 7.23.
Courier Changes
Each player now has their own courier automatically
Especially for situations where multiple players on a team need to carry out items, this gets rid of the need to delegate that task and send someone back. It is also going to let teams pull out some crazy tactics, so keep your eyes on Southeast Asia, because those players love Couriers.
Courier now gains levels when your hero gains levels
A basic change that makes the Courier viable through the entire game with less reliance on positioning.
Courier movement speed reduced from 380 to 275
Courier health reduced from 75 to 70
The speed reduction is going to make it easier to chase down any Courier on the map, which could lead to fights being forced if teams want to protect their items. The health drop is minor, but it makes decisions revolving around a potential Courier jump happen faster.
Courier now provides 85 GPM while it is alive (this replaces the base 91 GPM that previously existed)
Courier passively gains +10 movement speed, +10 health and +two GPM increase per level
Passive gold per minute is very important here and the decrease doesn’t change that. You will still want to keep your Courier alive, which means in some scenarios it might be better to let your hero die while protecting that GPM instead.
And it also makes leveling your hero more important, too, because the higher your level, the more gold you get from your Courier. And it also becomes harder to catch and kill, too.
Courier gains flying movement at level five
Arguably the strangest change, this is going to cause a lot of issues with support players that remain at low levels until the late stages in the game. Not having a flying Courier will affect how deep they can push without needing to go back for items.
This might not be a bad thing considering all of the other positives, but it is something to watch.
Courier gains Speed Burst active ability at level 10 (6-second duration +50% MS, 120 CD)
Courier gains ability to use wards at level 15
Courier gains Shield active ability at level 20 (two second duration, 200 CD)

Arc’s and Tempest Double’s necro book can not be pernamently assigned to different hotkeys. Thus, it is not trivial to send both necro books on different camps relatively quickly.
Skeleton king can be played as a tank, initiator, or carry.

Healing Salve or a tangoes prov >Clarity gives Ostarion more opportunities to set up kills early on with Hellfire Blast .
Two Iron Branches give Skeleton King enough mana pool to cast Hellfire Blast two times at level 1.
Quelling Blade is an excellent starting item for Ostarion as it allows him to get last hits easier. It also makes Mortal Strike hit harder against creeps and increases the effectiveness of Vampiric Aura when attacking creeps.
Magic Stick can sometimes be the difference between a death and a kill. Its active usually grants enough mana to sustain Reincarnation .
Boots of Speed prov >Helm of Iron Will can be built into an Armlet of Mordiggian later on and gives extra survivability in the form of armor and health regeneration.
Magic Wand prov >Power Treads increases Ostarion’s damage per second; attribute switching can also make his limited mana pool go much further if the treads are switched to intelligence.
Armlet of Mordiggian is Ostarion’s main DPS item. It is also easy to negate the health drain with the help of Vampiric Aura .
Desolator makes Ostarion’s physical attacks to hit harder, especially against targets with already low armor. Vampiric Aura also benefits greatly from it, as it heals based on dealt damage after armor reduction.
Black King Bar negates Ostarion’s main weakness: being chain-stunned and then burst down after Reincarnation . Furthermore, as long as he is not disabled, he can keep hitting enemies, healing himself up with his aura. Dota 2 skeleton king abilities first poughkeepsie
Assault Cuirass increases Ostarion’s damage output by increasing his attack speed and further reducing enemy armor. The aura from this item also increases his team’s armor and attack speed. Since Skeleton King usually survives longer, the item’s aura prov >Abyssal Blade not only gives Ostarion some health and a decent attack damage boost, it also gives his attacks a chance to bash and, on top of Hellfire Blast , another active stun which also pierces spell immunity, which is very handy as he is easy to run away from if his own stun is on cooldown.
Heart of Tarrasque gives Ostarion a great health, health regeneration and attack damage boost, making him even harder to kill and harder to ignore.
Heaven’s Halberd gives Ostarion some evasion against enemies which rely on their physical attacks, and lets him cut off an enemy carry from their primary source of damage for a while.
Monkey King Bar increases Ostarion’s attack damage, counters enemies with evasion abilities or items such as Butterfly or Heaven’s Halberd, and prov >Hellfire Blast is not an option.
Divine Rapier is an excellent item for Ostarion to get due to it not dropping if Reincarnation activates upon death, thus making it less likely for him to lose it. When carrying the Aegis of the Immortal , Ostarion has to die 3 times to lose the Rapier. The great damage boost also increases his endurance by improving his lifesteal aura’s returns.

Places 2 buffs on Templar Assassin, named “Damage” and “Absorb”. One buff grants instances of damage block and the other instances of bonus attack damage.
The numbers of left instances are visible on the buff icons. The buffs and the visual effects of the ability are visible to everyone.
The bonus damage is added as regular attack damage bonus, which is visible in the HUD.

But as for the rule changes, there were three major factors implemented into the new matchmaking update to help combat a recent influx of ‘smurf’ and ‘booster’ accounts:
Players with extremely low behavior scores
Breaking Steam’s ToS regarding the buying and selling of accounts
Players detected using exploits to gain an advantage over other players
What most people getting these lifetime bans are being flagged for is the extremely low behavior score, whether it is recent or if they are repeat offenders.
If a player is rude to teammates, refuses to play with a team mentality, or is somehow abusing one of the systems within Dota 2 to harm other another player’s experience, they will start losing behavior score. Likewise, players who are team-oriented and play well with others can receive boosts to that score through after match commendations.
The max score available is 10,000, but how these points are tallied isn’t known. But once you reach below a certain threshold in that behavior score, you will be moved into a low priority matchmaking queue and only be allowed to play with other toxic players.
Now there is an extra level, which results in the most toxic of those players being banned altogether, along with the cheaters, boosters, and players who broke the terms of service.
“The first ban wave is to players with exceptionally low behavior scores,” Valve said in its statement. “We will continue to do regular ban waves for users who fall into this small percentage of the community. Users that reach this low level of behavior in the game are too big of a tax on the rest of the community and are not wanted.”
And while there are going to be a few mistakes here and there, as there are with all algorithm-based systems, these bans should rapidly improve the quality of life within ranked Dota 2. Plus, the regular players who aren’t in any danger of being harmed by these updates get to enjoy watching the underbelly of the community try to argue against these bans.
