Lina, the Slayer, is a ranged Intelligence hero, adept at destroying enemy heroes quickly by delivering massive bursts of magical damage, making her one of the most effective gankers in the game. She possesses immense damaging capabilities all throughout the game, but is very fragile. Two of her fiery spells are her main source of damage, Dragon Slave sends a wave of fire to burn enemies in her path while Light Strike Array stuns them with a concentrated pillar of solar flame. Each of her spells deals great damage early on and has a low cooldown. Her Fiery Soul bolsters her attack and movement speed every time she casts a spell, which gives her scaling damage for the later game. Laguna Blade, her ultimate, is her ace in the hole. Lina fires off a huge bolt of lightning at a single target, dealing colossal damage. Laguna Blade’s damage is staggering in early-mid game, and late game is still enough to destroy frail enemy heroes. Dragon Slave, Light Strike Array, and Laguna Blade are incredible flaming nukes that can incinerate her target instantly, and Fiery Soul allows her to transition into a strong and fast physical attacker. Though her power falls from its peak late game, mana-boosting and damage-increasing items can be purchased to keep herself up.

Abilities [ edit ]

  • Dragon Slave travels at a speed of 1200, taking 0.9 ( 0.98) seconds to travel the full distance.
  • Can hit units up to 1275 ( 1375) range away (travel distance + end radius).
  • The complete area is shaped like a cone.
  • Light Strike Array destroys trees within the affected radius.
  • Light Strike Array first applies the debuff, then the damage.
  • The visual effects and the sound during the 0.5 second effect delay are only visible and audible to allies.
  • Lina has two different animations for this spell, leading to two possible cast backswing durations.
  • Using items does not trigger Fiery Soul.
  • Each spell cast refreshes the duration of the whole stack, making it theoretically possible to permanently have max stacks on.
  • At 2 stacks the buff grants 10%/12%/14%/16% ( 14%/16%/18%/20%) movement speed and 80/110/140/170 ( 140/170/200/230) attack speed.
  • At 3 stacks the buff grants 15%/18%/21%/24% ( 21%/24%/27%/30%) movement speed and 120/165/210/255 ( 210/255/300/345) attack speed.
  • Places a debuff on the target, which applies the damage upon expiring. The debuff lasts 0.25 seconds.
    • This means the spell can be avoided by being invulnerable or hidden (or spell immune when not upgraded) as the debuff expires.

Recommended items [ edit ]

  • Tango restores health to keep Lina in lane.
  • Null Talisman gives attributes so Lina can get last hits.
  • Iron Branch prov >Clarity sustains mana so Lina can keep using abilities, threatening enemies more.
  • Magic Stick is useful since Lina is squishy and has multiple high-cost low-cooldown spells picking up Magic Stick can increase her early staying power greatly.
  • Boots of Speed helps Lina get into position to land her abilities while avo >Bottle is a common pickup for Lina when playing in the mid lane.
  • Phase Boots ‘s attack damage complements Fiery Soul to increase Lina’s damage output.
  • Arcane Boots is a viable alternative, especially for a more support oriented Lina. Dota 2 lina inverse cosplay store
  • Bloodstone can solve Lina’s mana issues while also improving her low HP pool. With enough charges, she can keep up her full stacks of Fiery Soul without having to worry about being out of mana during the next team fight.
  • Eul’s Scepter of Divinity enhances Lina’s positioning even further and greatly boosts her mana-regeneration because of her high base Intelligence and Intelligence gain. It can also be used to set up Light Strike Array fairly reliably.
  • Blink Dagger gives Lina the ability to stay back in safety, then blink in at an opportune moment to cast her Light Strike Array before the enemy can see it coming and evade it.
  • Aghanim’s Scepter roughly boosts Lina’s Laguna Blade damage by another ability point, increases her survivability because of the increase to her attributes, and lets her damage stay relevant even against Black King Bar users in the m >Drum of Endurance improves her own positioning and all attributes for relatively low cost and also benefits her team.
  • Shadow Blade can be useful for a carry Lina, as it helps her to cast Light Strike Array while invisible, and also prov >Scythe of Vyse gives her team an important disable that also helps to ensure she lands Light Strike Array. Furthermore, its attribute bonuses will make her a bit more survivable and drastically improve her mana regeneration.
  • Crystalys prov >Daedalus or Bloodthorn depending on your preference.
  • Black King Bar is sometimes picked up when Lina is carrying, especially against teams with many disables.
  • Shiva’s Guard both helps with Lina’s mana regeneration problems as well as her low armor value while also benefiting her team with Shiva’s Guard’s aura and active ability.
  • Rod of Atos prov >Octarine Core ‘s lifesteal gives more survival potential in teamfights. Also, it gives a huge intelligence boost, as well as a greater ability to spam spells.
  • Ethereal Blade is a decent luxury item if the farm is available. It allows Lina to amplify her magical nukes, and slows enemies to help her land them. Using the active on herself is also a good escape mechanism against late game carries.

Captain’s Mode 101

Not so long ago we discussed how playing Random Draft might be a better Dota experience, but there is one more mode to play in ranked matchmaking. One that gives the most control over how the game will develop and what strategy each team will adhere. Excitement in Captains Mode starts from the very beginning, and here are some general tips on improving your drafts and creating playable team compositions.

Draft Disables

There is a reason this rule is at the top of the list. It is possible to make a functional draft without a single stun, but it will still put your team at a major disadvantage. Draft your disables and draft them early, otherwise you will be cornered in a situation, where you will need very specific hero for a specific role and having limited options is never good.

Catch vs Initiation Heroes

Centaur Warrunner is an initiator. So is Magnus, but these heroes are very different. When drafting your disables, keep in mind cooldowns and how abilities play out. Lately, in the pro-scene, teams started drafting one low-cooldown, low-value “catch”-initiator and one big teamfight turning hero like Warlock. This allows teams to successfully gank, without the repercussions of long cooldowns. But when there is a massive teamfight, they are prepared.

“Cheese” heroes

Counter-picking is bread and butter of Captains Mode, but there are several heroes in the game, which require an answer before they are even drafted or thought of. Keeping these heroes in mind is always a good idea—their pick can completely change the landscape of the game and the draft.

Luckily, these heroes are generally hard to play and not every team will have a good dedicated player for Meepo, Broodmother, Visage etc. Regardless, keeping these “cheese” heroes in mind is always a good idea and having at least some form of outpush, some form of AoE control and some answers to split-push is a necessity.

Ask teammates to check enemy profiles

There is nothing wrong with getting to know your enemy before the game begins. A lot of players are exceptionally good on some heroes and play them a lot. Allowing them to pick such hero is a huge mistake. You might be playing in a 3k average game, but it doesn’t mean that one of the enemies can’t play Visage like a 5k. Checking the “cheese” heroes is a priority, but even more regular confident picks for the enemy can be devastating for your team.

Opening Picks

Keep your opening picks flexible. They do not necessarily need to be trick heroes, but they shouldn’t force you into a particular strategy archetype either. The current meta revolves around early position 3 or 4 picks, generally with a good “catch” hero or a strong counter-initiator. These heroes fit virtually any lineup and every team needs disables.

Do not over-respond to the enemy’s draft

This mistake is a lot harder to unlearn since most players are programmed to respond to specific enemy picks with specific picks of their own. Yes, counter-picking is great, but dedicating more than two heroes specifically for shutting down one of the enemy heroes will leave you with a mess of a team. Countering the enemy strategy is good. Having your own strategy and game plan is better.

Know your teammates

This is applicable at all levels of play. A player having very high MMR doesn’t mean he can play every single hero in the game. Morphling can be the absolute best pick for the situation, but if you don’t have a player to execute the hero properly, going for a more comfortable option is almost always better. Push your team to their limits, but not over it.

Keep early game in mind

The pace of the game is very different from the one we had in the 6.8x era, where the comeback gold mechanic made comebacks so much easier. The current metagame doesn’t allow for complete throws of the early game. You don’t need to dominate all three lanes to win the game and it is possible to get back into the action after a series of successful high ground defences, but why put yourself in such position in the first place? Laning is important, heroes don’t automatically start the game with level 6 and having ways to deal with early skirmishes is advised.

Know your timings and play according to them

This is less of a draft problem and more of an execution one, but it still worth mentioning. Different team compositions will peak at different timings. Some teams will only get stronger as the game progresses, while others will be an absolute powerhouse in the 20-30 minute window, but will quickly fizzle away afterwards. Play what you drafted. Gank if you need to gank, push if you need to push or turtle up if you need to. Don’t get sucked into the automatic pattern of Dota, but rather think of what your specific lineup needs to do at this specific moment.

Role changes

The changes in 6.82 made Bloodseeker less of a carry and more into a teamfighter like Enigma . Laning him in jungle is most effective IMHO since new Bloodrage became such a double edged skill.

That means, getting the timing when to go online right is even more important now. As soon as you hit level 6, you should gank all lanes whenever your Rupture is available.

Skill Build

Bloodrage : Increases all damage recieved and dealt, no matter what kind of damage. That includes spells, items, autoattacks. Heals for a percentage of max HP of anything the unit with Bloodrage kills but also heals anyone who kills the buffed unit.

How to use it:

  • Jungling – Increases your jungle speed by boosting damage, heals you by killing jungle camps.
  • Ganking – Increases damage on target of Rupture -> quick pickoff.
  • Buffing glasscannons – Heros who can deal damage from afar can use the buff very well without much risk. Examples: Zeus , Sniper , Silencer (Can buff after Last Word was cast)

Blood Rite : New spell with sick animation (best looking in game IMHO). Pure damage + Huge AOE silence but 3 second delay. => Combine with Rupture or a teammate’s disable.
Also great for zoning out enemies in teamfights.

Thirst : Truesight vision on all enemies below 30% hp. Free damage and movement speed for each HP your enemies are lacking. => 1 hero missing 10% HP = +3,5 damage and +4% movement speed at level 4.

Rupture : Forces enemies to stand still or suffer moderate (level 1) to severe (level 3) pure damage. This is your initiation skill. It is great to prevent enemies from blinking away, however Town Portal Scroll is a cheap escape. Therefor make sure to make use of Bloodrage , Blood Rite and your Urn of Shadows for enough damage when you use Rupture or have a teammate with a stun ready.

Max Thirst first – in the laning stage, there will always be some heros lacking some HP which boosts your damange and lets you jungle faster. The speed boost also lets you help out in nearby lanes on occasion.

I am still not sure about whether maxing Bloodrage or Blood Rite first. For now I found maxing Blood Rite first better because it gives more guarateed damage. Relying on Bloodrage for damage in ganks is risky. Feel free to comment on that.

Item build and game progression

Start without regen? NOOB!
In case of jungle Bloodseeker it really is not needed. Better to buy Observer Wards or Animal Courier to help out your (probably) solo support a bit.

First items you build are Boots of Speed and Urn of Shadows – ahh there’s your regen. Then turn the boots into Power Treads .

By the time you have Power Treads you should have reached level 6 and be ready to gank. With (hopefully) some kill bounty you build a Blade Mail . Why Blade Mail ? Because Bloodrage essentially doubles its effectiveness – think about it.

From there on it depens on the enemy lineup and the game progression about what to build next. Black King Bar vs lots of stuns, Crimson Guard if you team can use some damage block, Assault Cuirass if your team needs some bonus armor, Heart of Tarrasque vs heavy nukes, Abyssal Blade if you need a stun, Butterfly for evasion, Manta Style to dispell yourself, Diffusal Blade to dispell others, Monkey King Bar if the enemy has evasion, Scytche of Vyse Eye of Skadi if you don’t know what to buy anymore.

It is important to farm whenever your Rupture is on cooldown. Don’t sit in a lane, in enemy vision and next to one of your cores taking his gold/xp. Stay in jungle and off vision and pounce on the enemy every minute when Rupture is available. This will make them scared to go to lane and secure your team an early advantage.

After getting picked off by Bloodseeker ganks, at some point your enemy will try to 5 man push a tower. Thankfully, all new Blood Rite is a beast in teamfights. However, Bloodseeker is a lot less tanky compared to 6.81. Casting Bloodrage on yourself in a teamfight is often a bad idea and you no longer heal when enemy heros die next to you. This means you have to stay back at least at the beginning of the teamfight.

The Rupture + Blood Rite combo is also applicable in teamfights since it forces your enemies to either leave one of them behind, or get mass silenced.

Creeping / Jungling

To Jungle Bloodseeker , you use a technique called “choke point jungling”. That meas, cutting trees near camps and hiding there so only one creep can hit you at a time. I linked a video below.

The hardest point to jungling Bloodseeker is at level 1. Go to the runespot at 0:00 but try not to engage in a fight there. Once creeps spawned, check the medium camps. Worst case is 2x centaurs who are really hard to kill at level one. In that case you may check the big camps for trolls. If still unlucky, make sure to get a good choke point and kill the big centaur first. Dont use Bloodrage right away, use it when the centaur is below half HP.

Once you are level 2, just make sure you have Bloodrage on you whenever you kill a creep and you should be max HP all the time.

Dota 2 Workshop – Item FAQ

Is there a main resource web page for the Dota 2 Item Workshop?

  • Yes. The Dota 2 Item Workshop Guidelines Homepage is the starting place for item workshop resources.

Do I need a special Steam account to submit items to the Dota Workshop?

  • You need to follow certain procedures to set up a Steam account and submit bank and tax information before you can add items to the Dota Workshop. Please see Account Preparation for Workshop Submissions for details.

What are the steps to making and submitting a Dota 2 Workshop item?

  • Concept: Come up with an idea. Dota 2 test on steam
  • Reference: Go to the Hero Requirements page to find model and texture budgets and reference files for hero items.
  • Author your items. See links on the Workshop Guidelines home page and the Tutorial and Software links on this page for more information about the following creation processes:
    • Model: Using a 3D modeling program, create the model for the item, weighting the mesh to a Valve reference file where applicable.
    • UVs: Unwrap the 3D model so you can texture map it.
    • Texture: Using your UVs as a guide, paint the surface of your item.
    • Shaders: Adjust the properties of your materials.
    • Animation: Needed for NPCs such as couriers that have a custom skeleton.
  • Install the Dota 2 Item Workshop tools
  • Test and submit your items
    • Use the Dota 2 Item Workshop Item Tools to compile and test your items in game.
    • Upload your items to Steam’s Dota 2 Item Workshop and spread the word to the Dota community.

How does the item publishing process work?

  • After you submit your item to Steam’s Dota 2 Item Workshop, t he Dota community will see it displayed as a new submission and will provide feedback and votes for your item.
  • Interesting items are selected by Valve’s Dota Economy team for review based on quality, creative and technical fit with Dota and community reaction.
  • Valve artists and the economy team review items in game, looking at technical and artistic execution, gameplay readability, and comparing them to other custom and default items.
  • If there’s interest in shipping your items we may request that you make revisions.
  • If the revisions are approved, we prepare the items for our pipeline and integrate them into pre-shipping builds of Dota 2.
  • We test your items in game through internal playtests.
  • We release the items on the Dota 2 store and share the revenue from the store sales with you.

How do I submit a Dota Team or Player Branded item, a Dota League ticket, or a Dota Game Mod?

  • Team, Player, and Caster Branded Items
  • Dota 2 League Tickets – read the League instructions first, then submit tickets as Contract Only through the Item Workshop.
  • Dota 2 Game Mods

What are some guidelines for matching the Dota 2 art style?

  • Please be aware that “matching the Dota 2 art style” does not mean strictly following the coloring and silhouettes of Dota 2’s default hero items. Dota 2’s art style follows very important general design concepts that apply to the readability and quality execution of all items, including inventive items that thoughtfully differ from the defaults and add to the appeal of our game. These principles are covered in the Character Art Guide and other Asset Creation Guidelines that have been updated and expanded for Source 2.

What should always be avoided when creating items for Dota 2?

  • Obscenity: We will automatically reject any obscene items.
  • Copyright infringement: Even if you made a model yourself, if you used an existing likeness without the owner’s permission, it’s copyright infringement. Unauthorized images, audio or models from other commercial properties, from other people’s Steam workshop submissions, from artist’s galleries on the Internet or from any other sources covered by copyright cannot be used in Dota 2.

Where can I find good tutorials to learn 3D modeling?

  • There are a lot of digital art communities online with great information:
  • Search for ‘speed modeling’ or tutorials using your specific modeling or animation software on YouTube.
  • Several Dota workshop artists have created item authoring guides on the Steam Community. If you’re impressed by the items of a workshop artist, click on the artist’s link under “Created By” on the item’s workshop web page. This will take you to the Steam Community page for the artist. They’ll have listings in the column on the right under “Guides” if they have created community guides. See if they have created any guides for authoring items. Some instructions and images may refer to Source 1 procedures but they could still be very helpful.
  • Look at our list of Service Providers to find toolmakers, organizations and users who provide tutorials and other assistance to workshop artists. Dota 2: The International 2019 Lineup is Complete

It’s been a long wait, but it’s finally over – The International 2019 lineup is complete.

Teams from around the world will be competing for one of the biggest rewards in esports. With the prize money currently sitting at over $29.5 million and rising, we are hyped for the start of TI.

Read on and find out who has made it through from the Regional Qualifiers to join the other 12 teams. Also, find out if we predicted the Regional Qualifier results correctly…

Europe: Chaos Esports Club

Did we predict this one correctly? Yes!

The first region on our list is Europe. Those of you immersed in the Dota 2 pro scene will no doubt have noticed that Lasse Aukusti “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen recently left Team Liquid. We covered this at The Game Haus as it happened, but new details have come to light courtesy of fellow Dota 2 pro, Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka. Dota 2 international 2013 east qualifiers for pga

In a recent YouTube video, JerAx said, in no uncertain terms, that MATUMBAMAN was actually kicked from Team Liquid. The whole affair came as a huge disappointment to fans of MATU, who expected not to see him at TI.

Well, those same fans were in for a treat when MATUMBAMAN subsequently enrolled with Chaos Esports Club. With MATU leading the charge, Chaos went on to dazzle in the European Regional Qualifiers. They subsequently qualified for one of the remaining six spots. We’re desperately hoping for a Chaos vs Liquid showdown on the main stage.

North America: Forward Gaming

Did we predict this one correctly? Yes!

While Forward Gaming as a Dota 2 organization is relatively new to the scene, having been founded in late 2018, they do boast some veteran talent. Seasoned professionals with TI experience like Johan “pieliedie” Åström and Quinn “CCnC” Callahan make up their roster. They were certainly the favorites going into the North American Regional Qualifiers.

In the grand final of the NA Qualifiers, Forward Gaming faced off against J. Storm. Another relatively new organization, J. Storm also features veteran talent like Clinton “Fear” Loomis. Showing their pedigree, J. Storm took the first game in the best of five. However, Forward Gaming was not to be beaten. Galvanized by the early defeat, they fought back to take the series 3 – 1.

South America: Infamous Gaming

Did we predict this one correctly? Yes!

We’ll be the first to admit that this prediction was a stab in the dark. If, like us, you’re not up to speed on your South American Dota, then you can be forgiven for not having heard of Infamous Gaming before. However, they do actually have International experience under their belt. The team qualified for TI 2017 but were unable to place higher than 13th.

Since that early exit, they have reshuffled their roster pretty comprehensively. They now enter TI 2019 with a largely Peruvian lineup. The exception being Adrian “Wisper” Cespedes Dobles, the first player from Bolivia to ever qualify for TI.

The roster shuffle has obviously done some good. Infamous Gaming qualified 1st in the South American Regional Qualifiers and now form part of The International 2019 lineup.

Southeast Asia: Mineski

Did we predict this one correctly? Yes!

Despite not having achieved much mainstream success, Mineski has been around in the Dota 2 pro scene for some time. One of their first major tournaments was The International 2011 where they finished 9-12th. At the time, this wasn’t enough to earn them any prize money, but it did kick-start their career on the pro scene.

At The International 2018, they once again finished 9-12th. However, due to the increase in the tournament’s popularity and mainstream appeal, this was enough to net them some decent prizemoney. $382,983, to be exact.

Now, for the second year in a row Mineski have qualified for TI. They are now ready to give it their all on the main stage against the giants of the esports scene.

China: Royal Never Give Up

Did we predict this one correctly? No.

We thought for sure it was going to be CDEC on this one.

It was a close one, though. Royal Never Give Up faced off against CDEC in the China Regional Qualifiers Grand Final. While we would have loved those extra 500 Battle Pass points, the best team on the day won it.

You might recognize talent such as Tue “ah fu” Soon Chuan among their squad. As a support player, ah fu actually served time at fellow Chinese Dota team, LFY. During his time with the squad, they placed an incredible 3rd at The International 2017. This was a year when Chinese teams dominated the podium positions, and only Team Liquid could keep them from winning the tournament.

While the organization might be less than a year old, RNG might be a team to watch in The International 2019 lineup.

CIS: Natus Vincere

Did we predict this one correctly? No.

And we’re a little bit ashamed.

We’re sure if you’d asked most people who their favorite team was about eight years ago, they’d have told you Na’Vi. They leaped to fame as the winners of the first ever International tournament back in 2011.

The team boasted household names like Danil “Dendi” Ishutin and Clement “Puppey” Ivanov – a then-iconic pairing. It was these pros that brought us the unforgettable (and quite broken) Fountain Hook.

Now, however, there’s no sign of these legends in Na’Vi. Puppey now captains the dominant Team Secret and Dendi is a successful Dota 2 streamer. The team brings a whole new roster to The International 2019 and we wish them every success.

We think everyone is a closet Na’Vi fan, so we’re sure a lot of people are very happy to see the organization represented at The International this year.

Final Thoughts

Now that The International 2019 lineup is complete we can finally start looking forward to the tournament. We can also start making those predictions in the compendium. If you asked us, we’d say Team Secret are strong contenders to take the Aegis this year. However, as we all know, anything can happen in the game of Dota 2.

Numbers-Roles (explaining)

Numbers-Roles (explaining)

1. #1 role AKA carry Hardcarry Right clicker
2. #2 role AKA solo (mid or I feed etc)
3. #3 role AKA hardlaner/longlaner
4. #4 role AKA support
5. #5 role AKA lane support/ward bitch
6. Conclusion

#1 role AKA carry Hardcarry Right clicker

Heroes who need to be given space to farm in order to be able to have a great impact on teamfights. Generally carry heroes are agility heroes (but NOT necessarily) since their damage, attack speed and armor source is their primary attribute .
What defines a carry hero is clearly his skills and most of times the passives the hero has .
The main objective of carry is to farm better and participate in more kills than the enemy carry, so that he can have a huge impact on winning the game.
For example Drow Ranger’s Ultimate Passive (AKA marksmanship) giving her 80 agility (equal to 2 Ethereal blades in stats) proves that the hero does great amounts of damage.

#2 role AKA solo (mid or I feed etc)

Heroes who desperately need the levels and some farm as well. These heroes need to have an eccentric presence in mid game and will make the enemy team to focus them. Most of solo heroes have at least 3 active skills and high ganking potential.
Their main objective is to outlane and outfarm the enemy solo (or kill him which will lead to outlane as well).Their 2ndary objective is to gank the sidelanes and put pressure on enemy carry.
For example Storm Spirit is a great solo hero because of his great ganking potential (after he reaches level 6) and his ability to initiate on a single enemy (Vortex).

#3 role AKA hardlaner/longlaner

Heroes with escape skills who need the levels but arent farm depedent. These heroes aim for the mid game, helping their team to get kills and trying to find some farm which they lacked earlier.
Their main objective is to put pressure (haras/deny creeps) on enemy carry without dying.
The most typical example of hardlaner is Dark Seer due to his standard runaway mechanism and his ability to farm safe.

#4 role AKA support

Heroes with great teamfight skills who will lane with carry or will go to jungle but will try to gank and give kills to carry. Such heroes shine in early/mid game.
Their main objective is to get some early items which will be proved useful for teamfights
and ganking.
Their 2ndary objective is ganking on mid/easy lane to give a kill on your allied solo/carry.
Example of support hero is Chen,

#5 role AKA lane support/ward bitch

Heroes with good laning abilities either for helping the allied carry or for harassing the enemy heroes.
Their main objective is to keep their carry alive and safe even if they have to die for this.
Their 2ndary objective is to get wards, smoke, flying courier etc.
An example of support hero is dazzle, his heal n grave make carry job easier versus harass of enemy heroes and his poison makes sure he can punish enemies if they get out of position.

New matchmaking system dota 2

A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Today’s update includes some engineering changes to the core matchmaking system to allow for bigger changes and better analytical capabilities. Over the next year, we’ll be spending more time focusing on various aspects of matchmaking such as intra-team balance, player conduct, new player experience, abusive behaviors, account buying, friend and teamplay aspects, high mmr matchmaking dynamics, and other issues in an effort to make the overall experience of playing Dota more fun for players of all levels. In this blog post we decided to drill deeper into the changes in today’s update and explain our thoughts.

Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. In order to help make progress on finding the right set of tradeoffs, today’s update includes a couple different experimental changes that will last until the end of the season. Close to the end of the season we’ll do a direct call for feedback on how the changes have worked out and use that feedback, along with data we are gathering in the meantime, to help inform the direction for the next season. We’ll also be working towards other features, such as better detection of smurfing and other abusive behaviors as the year progresses.

The first of these experiments is removing the concept of separate Solo and Party MMRs. We expect this to be the most controversial component in today’s update, as we’ve heard fair criticisms of it in the past. We can’t say that we are fully confident that this will end up being a good change either, so we’ll want to wait until the end of the season when we gather feedback and data on how it has played out after players have had a chance to absorb it. There are two major aspects with this change: 1) the teamplay and social aspect and 2) the value and correctness of the MMR value.

For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends. The game currently overly emphasizes playing solo and establishes a strong social reward mechanism for this, which causes many players to prefer playing alone than with friends. We believe that bias has over time caused more negativity and unhappiness when playing Dota. New matchmaking system dota 2 Furthermore, Dota is a very teamplay heavy game and we want to consider that aspect a bit more strongly in the hierarchy of matchmaking values. We’ve considered other approaches to the friend and teamplay incentives, but they tended to do a poor job at making it feel actually rewarding to play with friends and only papered over the issue.

For the correctness of the MMR aspect: We recognize that there is a tradeoff here on the mmr data quality if the match has solo mmr numbers with party mmr numbers, however we feel that the impact of that data noise is much smaller than even we initially considered it to be early on and generally with how it is discussed online. Most of the issues related to this we think we can solve with better algorithms. Another common case is playing with a friend who has a higher mmr than you, expecting that it will cause your mmr to go higher. While that has been at least partly true in previous matchmaking system iterations, our most recent version does a fairly good job of addressing this. We have enough data to form matches that cause you to have an even chance to win by carefully choosing the opponents that have a similar makeup. At a base level, we think mathematically we are able to have high confidence that playing with a friend will not have a material effect on your average mmr value with a properly balanced matchmaker. We’ve done some testing to make sure this is true in advance of this update, however we know it’s likely there is more work to be done here and we’ll continue working on this aspect in the background during this experimental period.

Through our investigation into the topic of matchmaking volatility and how parties affect the game, we’ve noticed something that fans likely already know: players have very different comfort levels when playing core roles versus support roles. Some players perform really poorly when they play a role they are not used to, and in turn introduce a lot of volatility in the system for everyone by causing your MMR number to drift away from your actual skill level as well as causing imbalanced games.

So because of that, and because of our abiding love of having multiple MMR numbers, we are adding a new concept of Core and Support MMR numbers. In order to achieve this, we need to know what role you want to play in advance of the match being formed. So for this experimental update, we are moving the Ranked Roles feature to the base Ranked matchmaking and expanding on its capabilities. Now when you matchmake, you will have the option of selecting roles from position 1 through 5 (Safe Lane Core through Hard Support), including multiple selections. So if you like playing Mid or Offlane, you can select those two, or if you like playing Hard Support and Mid, you’ll be able to do that as well. You will be matched based on either your Core or Support MMR.

Each MMR type will also have its own leaderboard, and for the purposes of this short experimental period the existing rank will be applied as the initial rank for both Core and Support. If we end up keeping this feature in the future, there will be a separate calibration phase for each one.

These experimental changes will remain active for the rest of this season for you to try out. Sometime after The International concludes, we’ll issue a call for community feedback to help guide the next steps in our efforts to increase matchmaking quality for everyone. We hope to have your support and patience through this experiment as well as subsequent changes towards the path of making a better overall matchmaking system.

While we were initially going to release this change as part of the Summer Scrub update, the amount of significant underlying code changes required for this update introduces a lot of potential instability. So we are splitting the Summer Scrub update into two parts, this first part for a matchmaking rework, and the second part soon after for bug fixes and a few quality of life additions. We are expecting that we’ll have a lot of matchmaking related bugs to work through today, so please let us know if you run into any issues and make sure to include the matchid in your reports.
