Game description

Become the part of the global battlefield in this MOBA. Join the team of five players and try to destroy your opponents. Occupy and destroy another team’s base, collect unique items and control your hero. Play Dota 2 browser game today and destroy the “Ancient”. Read more

What is Dota 2?

Dota 2 is an online multiplayer battle arena (also known as MOBA). It was created by Valve Corporation as a sequel to cult classic DotA (Defense of the Ancients). The history of this game is unique because it was not created as a separate title. Defense of the Ancients was a community-created mod for another hit game – Warcraft III: Regin of Chaos. After DotA became a hit among players the mod became a separate title. Try Dota game online on Vortex!

How to play Dota 2 online?

If you never played World of Warcraft or Dota game you will need to know some basics. First of all, you need to know that Dota is a multiplayer game. It means that you will be playing online with other players. To do so you need an Internet connection gaming hardware that will be able to run Dota 2.

If you don’t have a professional gaming set and you don’t want to waste money, you can play Dota game online in the cloud. There will be no need for a gaming PC – you can play on old computer, mobile or smart TV.

In Dota 2 you play in a team of 5 players. Each team has a separate base that they need to defend. This base is called “Ancient”. You and your team will have to keep your Ancient safe and, at the same time, try to destroy the base opposing team. To win you and your team need to destroy the other team’s Ancient.

How to choose Dota 2 heroes?

In Dota game you will be controlling a character known as “hero”. Each hero has unique abilities and requires a different fighting style. It is important to choose the character that will suit you best while you play. They have their strengths but also weaknesses so choosing a character requires some thought and strategy.

There are two primary roles of heroes. They either

  • “carry”
  • or “support”.

Characters that are “carry” are weak at the beginning of the game but have the potential to become very powerful as the game progresses. They can “carry” their team to victory.

Supporting characters lack the ability to deliver heavy damage, but they have other strong points. They can support “carries” using healing skills and other buffs.

If you are wondering when is the time to chose the character we can answer that this happens before the game starts. You will have your chance to chose which character you want to play as in the pre-game drafting phase. This is also a time to consult with your teammates and chose a strategy. The choice of a character depends on how your team plans to play and not only on your preferences. Remember – this is a team experience! As the heroes can’t be changed mid-game this is the final time to make a decision.

What happens when the Dota gameplay begins?

When you choose your hero you will be transported to the game. There you will find your team and the opposing team. Teams are known as Radiant and Dire. Each team occupies its base in opposing corner of the map. Now the fun begins! Destroy the Ancient of the opposing team and win! Dota 2 online game is fun and will keep you engaged for hours!

Sounds easy? We are sad to say that this is not so simple!

We recommend you to chose a strategy before the game starts so now it is time to stick to it. In the game, there are three main roadways called lanes. While you play you and opposing team will be positioned in these lanes. It is time for a fight of control. Whoever wins and manages to get to the opposing Ancient and destroy it, will win. You need to figure out how you and your team will go about it. There is no good way to do it so we will let you figure your style on your own.

Have we mentioned that Dota 2 online is a team game?

You will be playing with your team so the most important part is to work together. If you stick to your strategy and work as a team you will slowly beat your enemy. If you decide to play separately another team that works together will have an easy time in beating you.

What are Creepers?

Creepers are funny looking monsters that are the part of Dota 2 world. You will not be able to control them, but they are a part of your team! They will be your main wall of defense! Creepers will attack your enemies and their towers and also protect you. It is a good idea to let them cover you. They can be killed but they also spawn every so often. And what to do with other team’s creepers? Kill them and you will get gold!

You may also ask:

What does Dota stand for?

DotA stands for Defense of the Ancients. It was a mod to Warcraft III: Regin of Chaos and it was a beginning of DOTA as we know it.

Is Dota 2 online just like League of Legends online?

There are similarities between these two games but they are separate titles with different rules and worlds.

If you are a LOL beginner, read the blogpost on how to play League of Legends.

Is Dota 2 free?

Dota 2 is free to play. You can buy in-game items via microtransactions, but the game itself is free-to-play!

How many heroes are in Dota 2?

At this moment there are 115 heroes in Dota 2 game

How many people play Dota 2?

There are more than 1,5 million Dota 2 players at the moment!

Dota Summit 11 Qualifiers Recap

The first tournament of the 2019-2020 Dota Pro Circuit season will kick off on November 7th 2019 with the DOTA Summit 11. Eight teams from the six Dota regions will compete for $300,000 and a chance to play in the MDL Chengdu Major.

Two teams from the CIS and Europe region had two slots and North America, South America, China, and SEA had one slot. The highest ranked four teams that did not make it to the MDL Chengdu Major from the qualifiers played in a double elimination bracket for a slot at the first Minor tournament.

Here is a recap of all the action from the closed qualifiers.

North America

The newly formed Quincy Crew saw the Hassan brothers, Suma1L and Newbee. Yawar joining forces alongs > Newbee. CCnC , Newbee. MSS , and FWD. SVG for a new NA super team. Many expected this team to do well and make it to the Majors but lost to J. Storm in the last series of the Major qualifiers.

Quincy Crew were a league above the competition in this qualifiers and went 7-1 all the way to qualifying. Sumail and CCnC went a combined 72 kills, 3 deaths, and 73 assists in their 3-0 grand finals victory over Demon Slayers.

Sumail left the team shortly after the qualification and Quincy Crew replaced him with SabeRLight – on a loan from Team Singularity as position 3 and Yawar returns to the carry role.

South America

paiN Gaming , Incubus Gaming , NoPing Esports , and Furia were the four South American teams playing for the one spot at DOTA Summit 11.

This qualifier was a Brazilian show down as the three teams that weren’t the first to be eliminated featured all Brazilian players. Incubus Gaming had a Peruvian and Bolivian mixed squad but they went 0-4 to elimination.

NoPing e-sports which had five veteran Dota 2 players including sora and Chaos. Kingrd knocked down paiN Gaming to the lower bracket then beat FURIA Esports in the 2nd round to make it to the finals. FURIA Esports had Chaos. tavo and paiN. Duster but in that series the team that picked Faceless Void won all three games. FURIA Esports picked him first and won game one but NoPing e-sports picked him in games two and three to advance.

In the lower bracket paiN Gaming went 4-0 to secure their revenge match against NoPing e-sports. The grand finals was a stomp fest with each team passing victories back and forth. Game 1 was a 28-3 victory for paiN Gaming, game 2 was a 40-24 victory for NoPing, game 3 was 42-26 victory for NoPing, game 4 was 23-12 victory for paiN, and game 5 was a 27-5 victory for paiN.

Europe

This qualifier had two teams making it to the DOTA Summit 11 tournament. Ninjas in Pyjamas , Ad Finem , Team Singularity , and Ascomanni were the European teams.

Ninjas in Pyjamas were the most accomplished and experienced team at this qualifier and it showed as they went 4-0 and never had a net worth disadvantage after 20 minutes in their games.

The lower bracket finals however was an epic five game series between Ad Finem and Team Singularity.

Ad Finem placed 2nd at the 2016 Boston Major and the same squad rejoined forces to play in the new season. Team Singularity had five high MMR European players but they haven’t seen much success in the professional scene.

Game one was a throw by Team Singularity. In a 1 hour 13 minute game, Team Singularity had a net worth advantage of 26,000 gold at one point but from the 60 minute onward, it was all Ad Finem as they killed Team Singularity 14 times whereas Team Singularity killed Ad Finem only 10 times. This led to a massive gold swing including a Divine Rapier drop, which eventually led to the comeback victory for Ad Finem.

Games two and three were victories by Team Singularity and that could have led to a 3-0 finals victory for Team Singularity, unfortunately the throw in game 1 gave Ad Finem hope in games 4 and 5 and they delivered for a 3-2 finals victory.

CIS had two qualifier slots with teams Old but Gold , HellRaisers , Virtus. pro , and jfshfh178 participating in the double elimination qualifier.

Virtus. Pro was the most experienced and well known team but after losing three members of their original roster, they’re pretty much a new team. They still went 4-0 to advance to the Summit 11 tournament.

Despite their victory, it was announced that Virtus. Pro will not be attending the Summit 11 and Beyond the Summit stated they were working with jfshfh178 to replace them.

HellRaisers were knocked down to the lower bracket by jfshfh178 and then went undefeated to earn the 2nd slot at the Summit 11 tournament.

Each series in the CIS qualifier was a sweep with the team winning each series never losing a game.

China

The most competitive region in all of Dota featured four excellent squads playing for a single slot at the Summit 11. Royal Never Give Up , INVICTUS GAMING , Newbee , and CDEC could not qualify for the MDL Chengdu Major so they’ll have to win the Summit 11 minor to play in their home country.

Invictus Gaming and CDEC Gaming proved to be the top teams at this qualifier by winning in the first round and then CDEC Gaming knocked out Newbee in the lower bracket finals.

The grand finals was a young and up and coming Chinese star show down. Both teams had a young roster with iG. kaka being the veteran for Invictus Gaming.

The grand finals was a 3-2 series going the way of Invictus Gaming. It was a close series but Invictus Gaming makes it to another tournament and continue to impress. Unfortunately for CDEC, they did not have a TI grand finalist on their team, like Invictus Gaming did with Kaka. Dota 2 qualifier statscan

South East Asia

SEA is a tough region because it has many skilled and passionate players and organizations. In this region, Cignal Ultra , Team Jinesbrus , Geek Fam , and BOOM ID were competing for the one spot at DOTA Summit 11.

There was a Filipino squad in Cignal Ultra that was founded in 2019, an all Indonesian squad in BOOM Esports, and two mix matched but experienced squads in Team Jinesbrus and Geek Fam.

It should be no surprise that Geek Fam was the team that made it through these qualifiers. With veteran Dota stars in TNC. Raven , TNC. Kuku , and DuBu , beating this team was a tough ask.

You have to give it up to Kuku though. Despite all the controversy surrounding this Filipino star, he has been playing in many high exposure tournaments for years and continues to prove he’s one of the best Dota players in the scene. Even after leaving TNC Predator and being the face of their franchise for years, he joins a new team and immediately starts qualifying for big tournaments. Say what you want about his character but you can’t deny his success as a Dota pro!

Project Dota 2

In this Dota 2 Lion Guide, we will guide you on how you can play the hero Lion in Dota 2. Dota 2 comes with a very impressive roster of heroes and since this is a MOBA, there are no best heroes or worst heroes here. Every hero has its own strengths and weaknesses and depending on your playing style, every hero can be a really good one. If you prefer playing with Lion as your main, we have curated this Dota 2 Lion Guide which will help you become the ultimate player of this game.

Lion Guide – Dota 2

Our Dota 2 Lion Guide details everything that you need to know about playing the game as Lion including tips and tricks and best items.

Hero Introduction

If you want to have fun, enjoy the game and want to be a pain in the ass Lion is your pick. Lion is an intelligence ranged hero that is excellent in disabling a single target hero and giving out a ton of burst damage. It is a simple hero with less complexity for beginners to play with. This hero is mostly played as a Support Role/ Position 5 and very few times in a while as Mid Role/ Position 2. While facing heroes who are hard to stun or are too fast, you would want Lion to be on your side.

Lion’s first ability is Earth Spike. The ability is magical damage range stun which has the AoE of 125. This ability is quite useful to disable the enemy or a bunch of enemies if used properly. Really good Lion players know the cast range of the ability is 500 units but it extends to 825 units. While playing Pos2 you must max this ability in order to gain Last Hits (LH) in the mid lane and simultaneously stun the enemy hero. As Pos5 same can be done. Use this ability in the lane to harass the enemy and keep their health low to dominate the lane.

The second ability is one of the strongest disable ability of the entire game i. e Hex. An instant cast of this ability turns the enemy unit into a frog. Moreover, it gets rid of the passives like evasion or damage block of the target unit. At maximum level hex last till 4 seconds which is a quite long disable. During the laning phase, one level of the hex is more than enough. Hex not only stops channeling spells but also destroys illusions instantly.

Next comes Mana Drain. As evident by its name mana drain absorbs enemy’s mana. Dota 2 tips tricks This ability comes in handy as Lion’s mana pool is low. Mana Drain and Earth Spike are usually spammed in the laning phase. The beauty of mana drain is that it not only absorbs mana from enemy heroes but also from ranged enemy creep and neutrals with mana pool. Just like Hex, Mana Drain also instantly destroys illusions making Lion effective against illusion based heroes. Plus Mana Drain also lowers the movement speed of the target unit.

Lion’s ultimate is the Finger of Death which deals massive burst damage. Starting from the first level the ability has 600 magic damage. Plus having a long cast range makes it even more dangerous for enemy heroes. The key to using this ability to its best is to kill a hero with this ability which results in having a charge of additional 40+ damage per kill. This essentially is the strongest point of the ultimate. With the Aghanim’s Scepter, the ability’s damage is increased, the cooldown is decreased and the ability hits all units in 325 AoE.

When playing as Pos5 focus should be made on supporting the team by warding/dewarding, ganking and harassing enemy heroes in the lane. Though Pos2 Lion will always try to secure kills with the Ultimate ability in order to gain charges. Mid position Lion is as much dominating as the hero’s mobility. In that case, you might want to refrain from warding and save to get Dagger of Escape and rush to Aghanim’s Scepter.

Items

Below we have detailed the best items that you can use with Lion in different stages of the match.

Starting items

  • Support Role: Observer/Sentry wards, Tangoes, Magic Stick, Smoke of Deceit and Tranquil Boots.
  • Mid Role: Tangoes, Healing Salve, Null Talisman, Power Treads, and Empty Bottle.

Mid Game Items

  • Support Role: Bracers (If required), Force Staff, Glimmers Cape, and Aether Lens.
  • Mid Role: Dagger of Escape, Aether Lens, Ghost Scepter, Aghanim’s Scepter, and Force Staff.

Late Game items

  • Support Role: Aeon Disk, Aghanim’s Scepter, Dagger of Escape, Ghost Scepter, Euls of Divinity.
  • Mid Role: Ethereal Blade, Octarine Core, Kaya and Yasha, Scythe of Vyse.

Lion is a hero which can even own a six slotted carry hero with his low cooldown disable and heavy burst damage. When facing Lion precautions must be made to avoid being ganked or disabled because 9 out 10 times you might end up being dead.

Talent Tree Selection

While opting for the talents you must keep your role in mind. Pos5 role should select the +100 Cast Range because you need to spam your skills from a safe range and avoid dying in team fights. Mid role should go for the +90 Damage talent so that it is easier to LH in the lane but higher rank Mid role also go for cast range talent. It entirely depends on the situation they have to play in.

Pos5 Lion must go for +150 Gold/Min. When playing Pos5 you don’t get to LH much and in order to keep having map control with wards you need gold, so this talent suffices the purpose. As mentioned earlier, Mid role would aim to have as many kills as he can achieve and for this purpose +200 Finger of Death should be selected.

At level 20 Pos5 should opt for +500 Health over +2 Mana Drain Multi Target. Since supports are easily killed and sometimes targeted first, having 500 additional health will give a fair chance of survival. Though mana drain talent can also be used to counter illusion based heroes. Pos2 Lion should go for mana drain talent since he has a higher requirement for mana then Pos5 Lion.

Both talents on level 2, +325 AoE Hex and +1000 Earth Spike Range are equally useful to any position Lion. This talent mainly depends on the situation of the game. If heavy disable is the need of the hour AoE Hex talent is highly useful than the Earth Spike talent.

This concludes our Dota 2 Lion Guide. If you want to add anything to this guide, feel free to use the comments section below.

This week’s update comes a little earlier than usual. This week is Thanksgiving here in the US so we are taking a few days off.

But even if you don’t live in the US, I’m sure you will be thankful for all the great games that will come out of this weekend’s DreamHack Dota 2 Corsair Vengeance Cup. You will be able to watch every single game for free inside the client so get your bathrobe and bucket of turkey ready because this is going to be great.

Also available is a ticket for Star Series Star Ladder Season 4, v1lat’s at it again and the series is heating up! Past games will be tagged so they should start showing up soon, alongside with any new games.

Another reason to be thankful is the new Battle Point bonus you will get for playing Dota 2 games while in a party during this week. The bonus goes up depending on how many friends are with you in the party so it is time to let bygones be bygones and make those points rain.

And if you’re one of those artistic Dota 2 fans, we’ve just updated the Beastmaster workshop data to be compatible with the latest model changes. Some head and arm items might have to be slightly adjusted to match the new base.

See you next week!

Slark, who goes there?

Today’s update brings Diretide to a close, which means that it’s also Hatching Day! If you’ve been spending time sitting on some eggs like a mother hen, you’ll see a new option to hatch them. Who knows what will emerge?

This week we’ve got a new hero, and he’s a lovable little ball of claws and teeth – Slark! Enjoy mauling your enemies and then disappearing in a cloud of smoke, all while cackling like a deranged magician.

We’ve made some UI improvements this week too. We now have a chat wheel for communicating with your teammates so you can tell them just how a great a job they’re doing, and any message sent through the chat wheel is translated by wizards to each player’s language.

If you have suggestions for additional phrases for the chat wheel, you can submit them here. We’ll be incorporating that feedback in future patches. Also, if you reset your keybinds, there are now some helpful default templates on the player options screen that you can select from.

Our film department has also put together a recap of The International 2012, which you can watch here. They’re still hard at work on the documentary about The International 2011, Free to Play.

Finally, we’ve been getting so many great submissions from the Polycount Contest that we’ve decided to extend it by two weeks. The new submission deadline is December 3rd. Head over to the workshop to see some of the great work they’ve been doing!

As if that weren’t enough, here are some patch notes.

A Cornea-copia of Wards

As all you pro Dota 2 players out there know, the most important skill to develop is map awareness. Now there’s no easier way to look cool while winning games thanks to your new found skill than by checking out these freshly made Wards.

Also to be found in today’s update is the option to start games in Reverse Captain’s Mode when creating a practice lobby. In this mode Captain’s pick the heroes they want the other team to play, resulting in either hilarious or painful games. And what better way to show off this new mode than by checking out the atoD 2 tournament? Watch Pro teams like Na’Vi, mTw and Zero play heroes that don’t usually get a chance to shine.

Oh, perhaps you’re looking for this?

In other news, the G-1 Championship League started this week and we have already seen a good number of great games. You can find a pass for it in the Dota 2 store.

One of the new features you will find in today’s update is the Hall of Fame:

Dota 2 System Requirements (Min&Max Settings)

The first Dota 2 players emerged way back in 2011. Every year, Valve keeps revamping the game mechanics and adding brand new heroes. The latest update – Patch 7.20 was released in November 2018.

In addition to new mechanics and heroes, the updates come along with bug fixes and improved graphics and UI. Dota 2 is a moderately CPU/GPU intensive game.

To play this cult classic from Valve you do not necessarily need to have a high-end gaming PC, however the least powerful computers simply won’t cut the mustard.

Dota 2 System Requirements

Windows (PC / Laptop) | Minimum system Dota 2 requirements

  • OS: Windows 7
  • Processor: Dual core from Intel or AMD at 2.8 GHz
  • Video: nVidia GeForce 8600 / 9600GT

The Dota 2 map is a rather small, but still it features lots of details. Trees, terrain, shops, river, buildings, critters, and more.

During massive in-game battles, every single character activates a slew of various abilities and items, some of which can destroy the map objects like trees or otherwise drastically change the landscape.

All this usually cranks up rich and vibrant animation, which alongside other additional visual effects and eye candies can turn your gaming PC into a big resource hog.

On top of the visual effects, there are some in-game items like skins that enjoy custom animations. For instance, Inscribed Demon Eater, a wearable used by Shadow Fiend.

Valve heeded the interests of Dota 2 fans by making in-game skins look visually pleasing to their eyes, but not at the expense of PC speed and performance. You can easily buy and sell Dota 2 skins without any fee on Dmarket.

The Art of Warding

Being a support player myself, warding has always been a huge part of my gameplay. Having a good vision around the map or making an important de-ward always gave me huge pleasure. In today’s article, I want to discuss with you the process of warding, common mistakes, timings and much more.

Let’s start with the basics.

Table of contents

Part 1: Early-game warding

Observer Ward costs 50 gold, while Sentry Ward costs 75 gold. The gold required to purchase wards was lowered from patch to patch, and now both Observer and Sentry Wards are easily affordable for players in all positions. However, warding is still associated exclusively with supports.

So, why do you buy wards? Observer Wards can be used to give vision over the area or to block neutral camps from spawning. Sentry Wards can also be used to block camps, but mostly they are used to destroy enemy Observer Wards and reveal invisible heroes or units.

1. How many wards to buy at the beginning of the game? Where to place them?

These questions might seem simple, but many players have troubles with early wards.

a) Ward in the middle lane.

This ward is out of the question, the most important to place at the beginning of the game. Having the ward in the middle lane will help your midlaner to control the lane better. Try to place it as soon as possible to avoid it getting spotted.

Tip: When you play for Radiant, there are several spots behind the trees, which you can use to place wards safely.

b) Ward in the safelane.

This is where many players, especially in low ranks, make a mistake. Having Observer Ward in the safelane is not a requirement. You need to get the ward for the safelane in two cases:

you are going to lane against a hero, who can harm you by using the Fog of War, for example, Pudge(Meat Hook), Mirana(Sacred Arrow), Keeper of the Light(Illuminate) and Techies(Proximity Mines, Suic >

c) Ward in the offlane.

As meta switched heavily to 2/1/2 lanes, it is no longer necessary to give the Observer Ward to your offlaner. Do it either only if it is necessary for him to block the neutral camp, or in case he is going to lane against a tri-lane.

d) Anti-roamer ward.

In case you play against a very powerful roamer, such as Earthshaker or Earth Spirit, it can be very useful to place a ward, which would spot his rotations to the middle lane.

Most of the times getting only one Observer Ward is absolutely fine. Use extra gold to get yourself additional Faerie Fire, Clarity or Enchanted Mango. Having extra consumables can have a huge impact during the laning stage. Make sure to get second Observer Ward if it will be necessary.

It is important to purchase a Sentry Ward if you are going to lane against a hero with invisibility, such as Treant Protector, Sand King, Riki and Bounty Hunter.

2. The first nighttime. A most important part of the game for the warding.

Lack of movement is the biggest issue of supports in low ranks. Lack of movement also equals lack of good vision around the map. The first nighttime is a time when heroes start to rotate around the map actively. This is why it is very important to provide good vision for your teammates, to avoid them getting ganked.

Ideally, you should aim to bring x2 Observer Wards right before the nighttime begins. Good support should be multitasking, so as nighttime starts at 5:00, you should try to take Bounty Runes and then place the first Observer Ward in the nearby cliff near the enemy tier-1 Tower, and then make a rotation to the middle lane to place the second ward there.

The better you get, the more you can adjust your ward positions, so it would be harder for enemy support to de-ward them.

While you place these wards, you should keep in mind that the enemy support wants to have the perfect vision himself as well. This is why it is very important to get yourself several Sentry Wards and check the most common warding spots.

3. Objective wards.

After the laning stage ends, you and your team should start playing around key objectives of the game, such as Towers and Bounty Runes.

To have an easier time sieging towers, it is very effective to place vision behind them.

Radiant:

Keep in mind, as it is very important to provide good vision in all stages of the game, it is especially necessary to do in the early-game. Thanks to perfect vision, your team can gain the advantage and then use it to win the game easily.

The Dota 2 Frankfurt Major: what you need to know

The group stages for the first-ever Dota 2 Major run tomorrow and Saturday, with the main event lasting from Monday to Saturday next week at Festhalle Messe in Frankfurt. This is the first of Dota 2’s ‘smaller’ regional championships: I say ‘smaller’ because it boasts a $3m prize pool. That exceeds every Dota 2 International prior to 2014 and every other tournament in every other competitive game, ever.

This is basically a bonus International: the same number of teams, the same format, and a world-class if not quite as eye-watering prize. Even so, there’s no reason to expect the Frankfurt Major to be any less dramatic than August’s main event.

What’s the format?

The group stages, which will be played over the next few days, will determine bracket placement in the main event. There are four groups of four teams, each playing best-of-threes in a double elimination format. Given the number of games taking place simultaneously, following all of the action in the group stages will be tough—but we’ll get to that in a minute.

The main event will be a double elimination bracket with all games played as best of three with the exception of the grand finals (best of five) and the first round of lower bracket games (best of one). On that basis, expect a bloody first day as the lower bracket teams scramble over each other for their tournament lives.

Where can I watch it?

All of the matches will be streamed on Twitch and via the official Dota 2 streaming site. You can also watch the matches in-client using Dota 2’s excellent spectator tools. This allows you to follow specific players, control the camera yourself, have your camera controlled by a specific commentator, or any combination of the above.

If you’re able to get to Frankfurt, the main event runs from 10:00 to 23:00 CET at Festhalle Frankfurt, Ludwig-Erhard-Anlage 1, Frankfurt. Its free to attend from Monday-Friday (though there’s likely to be some capacity restrictions) and a day ticket for the grand finals on Saturday costs €50.00. Get tickets and further information right here.

Where did IG go? And who is OG?

There have been some last-minute team changes due to the things that always happen at international esports events: Visa problems and surprise sponsorship. Chinese superstars IG encountered the former, and have been replaced by Newbee Young in Group C. OG, meanwhile, is the new name of (monkey) Business.

Which group stage matches should I watch?

There’s going to be a lot happening at once over the next few days and it’s very hard to choose which matches to watch. With that in mind, let’s break it down by day:

November 13th: Group A and B

Group A comprises Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, Virtus. pro and Newbee. EG can reasonably be expected to be the favourites, here, but they’ve not been on quite the same world-beating form as they were when they won the International with their former roster. There’s a lot of potential for upset within this group: Fnatic have talent but middling results. Newbee have regained their TI4-winning carry, Hao, and are stronger as a result. Virtus. pro are consistently entertaining to watch—their run of 5th and 6th place finishes belies their potential to knock out top-tier teams from time to time.

Group B comprises Vici Gaming, Unknown. xiu, Vega Squadron, and OG. Vici are the powerhouses here, a relatively known quantity in terms of talent, experience, and results. These are the guys you watch if you want the best chance of seeing absolutely top-tier Dota from every single player. Unknown. xiu are, appropriately enough, relative unknowns. They are the first South American team to ever qualify for an official Dota event, having been very successful (and very entertaining) in their run through the qualifiers. If you’re looking for an underdog to cheer for, these are your best bet.

Vega Squadron’s dark horse status took a hit when they failed to qualify for the TI5 main event, but they rode right back into form with their surprise victory at ESL One New York. OG, meanwhile, represent a wildcard of a different sort: a mashing together of new talent and veterans, former teammates and strangers. It’s a reunion of N0tail and Fly from old-Fnatic, Fly and MoonMeander from the TI5 compLexity lineup, plus relative newcomers Miracle – and Cr1t-.

On the 13th, then, I’d recommend starting with Vici Gaming vs. Unknown. xiu—while there’s a risk that it’ll be a one-sided game, it encapsulates the broadest spread of experience and new talent.

November 14th: Group C and D

Group C comprises Team Secret, Newbee Young, LGD Gaming and Cloud9. Secret’s early fall was one of the big stories to emerge from TI5, but the subsequent roster change has worked out for them: they won MLG World Finals and Nanyang and came second at ESL One New York. They are, comfortably, the favourites to win this tournament. Newbee Young are less favoured: they’re relatively new, they haven’t played much outside of China, and they were a substitute for IG. LGD are better favoured with the post-TI5 addition of rOtK rounding out a talented squad. Cloud9, meanwhile, having undergone a dramatic shift since TI5, releasing their entire roster and becoming a fully North American rather than mostly-European team.

Group D comprises EHOME, Alliance, CDEC and Mineski. EHOME have lost rOtK to LGD since TI5 but have done well since, picking up 3rd place in Nanyang. This is one of the oldest names in pro Dota, and they’re definitely back. Also back: Alliance, the TI3 champions whose knife-edge heartattack victory over NiP in the Euro qualifiers was one of the biggest moments in professional Dota this year. CDEC’s journey to the TI5 grand final was one of the stories of the year too, albeit something that they’ve not quite managed to replicate since. Mineski, finally, are the great hope for Filipino Dota at the event having proved themselves against SEA counterparts Fnatic in the qualifiers.

On the 14th, I’d recommend starting with either EHOME vs. Alliance (to confirm whether or not ALLIANCE ARE DOING IT) or Secret vs. Newbee Young, as it’s an underdog-overdog matchup similar to Vici and Unknown. For me, Alliance vs. EHOME clinches it on a very important metric: silly pro player names. EHOME’s new lineup includes ‘old chicken’, while Alliance have been having a lot of success with ‘Mynuts’. If you would like to hear a professional commentator bellow something like ‘old chicken is ALL OVER Mynuts’, then this is your best chance to do so. And that, when it comes down to it, is what professional gaming is all about.
