Before we introduce our new league, let’s do a quick flashback. DotA veterans might remember Pick League, hosted by Dota-League for a very long time. Before it shut down in 2011, Pick League was the most consistent place for European amateur and semi-pro teams to compete. Checking the current the division and position of a team within PL became the most simple way to roughly estimate its skill level. While Dota 2 brought many amazing improvements to the competitive scene, nobody has – in our opinion – been able to adequately fill the gap that Pick League has left behind. joinDOTA is hoping to do that by introducing the joinDOTA League with a similar format.

How does the joinDOTA League work?

>>> Divisions and Groups
The joinDOTA League (short: jDL) will be a league system for an infinite amount of teams divided into several divisions. The best teams will play in Division 1, the next best ones in Division 2, and so on and so forth. The number of divisions depends on the amount of participants, we expect there to be 5 or 6 in Europe by the end of the year. When a season starts, each division will be divided into groups of about ten teams. Division 1 will only be one group, Div 2 will have two or three, Div 3 even more, and so forth. All teams within a group face each other throughout a season in a two game round robin format to create a group ranking.

>>> Promotion and Relegation
At the end of a season, the best performing teams from each group get promoted to play in a higher division in the next season, while the worst performing ones might get relegated. Some will have to play playoff matches to decide about their future division. This way you can climb up or down the ladder from season to season. Prize money is only paid out for the teams in Division 1 (also called Premier Division). The goal for everyone else is to get promoted to the Premier Division – or to just play good matches for fun.

>>> Three Leagues: Europe, America, Asia
In order to avoid server and time zone issues, we’re not starting one, but three different leagues. One for Europe (including Russia, Africa, and parts of East Asia), one for America (North & South America), and one for Asia (mostly SEA, also including Australia). These three leagues will run separately from each other to avoid high ping matchups. While it’s highly recommended for everyone to sign up for the league according to their region, the final decision is left to the teams themselves based on their server and playtime preferences.

On top of the strict separation into three parts of the world, some parts of the leagues are going to be even more regional. Some very significant Dota nations (like Russia, Sweden, or Germany in Europe) will have national groups in lower divisions. Those are embedded into the whole league system and do not make it easier or more difficult to be promoted, they are simply only for teams from the given country. Division 1 and 2 will be purely international. This way some teams get the great experience of competing within their own country, while everybody, regardless of his origin, still has an equal chance to get to the top.

When To Get Aghanim’s Scepter On Carries

Aghanim’s Scepter is a peculiar item. It currently improves abilities or ultimates of 96 out of 115 heroes, however it is rarely picked up by anyone but the intelligence cores or utility offlaners. For most supports it is out of reach in terms of gold until the very late game and for most carries there are simply better alternatives which provide specific attributes or necessary answers to enemy items.

While the item has a decent stats-to-cost ratio, they are spread out equally across all three attributes, making Aghanim’s very suboptimal in terms of increasing you right-click DPS or survivability. Yet there are situations where this item on your right-clicking core might be the best solution to what the enemy has and this blog will be dedicated to highlighting and explaining potentially game-winning situational Aghanim’s upgrades for your carries.

Luna is often thought of as a strong position one carry with a great flash-farming ability that is coupled with insane movement speed, which allows her to accelerate her farm, take ancients early and potentially snowball out of control, while the enemy team is playing catch-up. She has a strong lane presence, high teamfight potential from level seven onwards, good wave and tower pushing abilities and it is understandable how she is currently one of the most popular and successful heroes in the game, with 13% pick rate and almost 53% win rate across all skill brackets.

Aghanim’s Scepter on such a hero really seems redundant—it doesn’t solve her survivability problems, offers very situational DPS that is easily countered with a BKB and generally feels like a wasted item slot. 7.07 addressed these issues with two rather strong talents: +100 Lucent Beam damage on level 20 along with a level 25 Eclipse 0.25s ministun and it jumped the Aghanim’s upgrade for the hero from “situationally mediocre” to “situationally good”.

Latest meta developments have shown that professional teams often prefer to have two flexible heroes on mid and safelane positions, who can be interchangeable in terms of who actually gets farm priority and ultimately carries the game. Luna might have a bad carry matchup developed during the draft, she might be picked for her early game tempo or she can be shut down during the laning stage. In this scenario her strengths of a flash-farming hard carry can be severely mitigated, but Aghanim’s can be a way for her to have a big impact on the game regardless.

A 400 damage long-range nuke and a very strong ultimate can make her a threat without her having to engage in the fight and frontline for her team. It can wipe out supports, force the enemy cores away and add the extra necessary damage to a frontlining ally. Late game Dota is frequently about a single good fight and even with an Aghanim’s build Luna will still be excellent at taking objectives, if she gets to them and is uninterrupted. Aghanim’s can give you this necessary fight, while Refresher Shard can allow her to counter the enemy buybacks as well. It is also an amazing counter to heroes who sit on their highground and stall the game, like Tinker or Sniper, especially when coupled with a high mobility core ally.

Medusa

The latest patch has nerfed Medusa, but she still remains one of the strongest carries of the meta and essentially tells the enemy team they either have to win in 40 minutes or less, or they will have a very bad game. The effect is two-fold: the enemy can be often forced into making mistakes from the pressure alone, but can’t afford not to take risks in trying to shut Medusa down. However, despite her apparent strengths, the hero is not unbeatable—she might be approaching 57% win rate in 5k+ games, but there are heroes who are definitely good matchups against her even in the late game.

Get manaburn is essentially what Medusa-countering strategy boils down to. Weaver, Anti-Mage and Mirana have natural manaburn talents and often back it up with extra Manta Style, while many illusions heroes go for Diffusal Blade. This is when Medusa’s Aghanim’s Scepter can start doing a lot of work, since Mystic Snake becomes a one-host ability against illusions.

It rarely is a good pick up against “low value” illusions of Phantom Lancer, where it is almost always better to go for a BKB+Mjolnir combo, but against Chaos Knight or even an Anti-Mage, it can ensure a quick wipe of the mana burning targets, which can potentially save an ally or Medusa herself.

It also has an added benefit or a downside of “petrified” status effect, which increases physical damage on the enemy, but completely shields them from magic one, so use the upgraded Mystic Snake with caution.

Drow Ranger

Drow Ranger in the professional scene is often picked as a safelane position two or even three, in terms of farm priority. Her main goal is not necessarily to deal damage herself, but rather enable her team in the fights and then start taking down buildings, while fully concentrating on her own safety. She works well with heroes like Puck, Storm Spirit, Queen of Pain etc., who can completely take over the map by midgame with a little help from their teammates.

Drow’s job in this scenario is to get very farmed and not to die, so that the lanes are always pushed in and there is a lot of space on the map for her other cores to farm. Aghanim’s Scepter is a great transitory item in this regard, since it substantially increases her survivability, while increasing her farm and wave-clear speeds, so that she can get to her Agility items much faster.

It is still a stalling item, for when a Drow strat goes wrong and early game doesn’t look too good for your team, and you don’t think you will be able to close the game early. Most of the time, with a good start, you can push directly into more proactive itemization.

It is also a great anti-illusion item, especially coupled with Mjolnir. Drow has certain vulnerabilities against multiple in-her-face targets, so it can be a very natural progression even when she is a position one carry against certain heroes.

Shadow Fiend

Magic Damage Shadow Fiend is becoming more and more viable—the changes to the Shadowraze significantly increased their potential, while the reworked talent tree really pushes player to explore this possibility. But is Aghanim’s Scepter a natural progression for a full on magic damage SF by Arteezy or is it in fact better suited for a hybrid or even regular right-clicking Shadow Fiend?

There is an argument in favor of the latter—Shadow Fiend’s level 25 talents are either 40% cooldown reduction or +3 damage per Necromastery stack. And the Aghanim’s Scepter increases your maximum soul count by 10. This has a two-fold effect, increasing the effectiveness of the ultimate as well as increasing the right-click damage of the hero by at least 20. As such, it is actually a very decent value proposition for this hero, since the stats-to-cost ratio is not only decent, but a lot more focused.

So to get a full effect from Aghanim’s Scepter, SF wants to go for the +3 Necromastery damage talent, forgoing the 40% cooldown reduction of Magic Damage SF. Does the hero really want it in general or what situations it can be good in is up for debate still, since the vast majority of high level players still generally prefer 40% cooldown reduction talent for their Black King Bars, Manta Styles, Hurricane Pikes, Shiva’s Guards and many more active items.

Dota 2 Lore – Outworld Destroyer:
One of a lordly and magisterial race, Harbinger prowls the edge of the Void, sole surviving sentry of an outpost on the world at the rim of the abyss. From this jagged crystalline Outworld, forever on guard, he has gazed for eternities into the heavens, alert for any stirring in the bottomless night beyond the stars. Imprinted deep in the shining lattices of his intellect lies a resonant pattern akin to prophecy, a dark music implying that eventually some evil will wake out there, beyond the edges of creation, and turn its attention to our world. With his whole being focused on his vigil, Outworld Destroyer paid little attention to events closer in to the sun. But at last the clamor of the Ancients, and a sense of growing threat from within as well as without, sent him winging sunward to visit the plains of war. Harbinger’s place in our own prophecies is unambiguous: he must be considered an omen of worse things to come. But his arrival in itself is bad enough.

Outworld Destroyer Skill 1: Arcane Orb (Q)
Adds extra pure damage to Harbinger’s attacks, based on his remaining mana pool. Arcane Orb also does bonus damage to summoned units and illusions.

Outworld Destroyer Skill 2: Astral Imprisonment
Outworld Destroyer places a target allied or enemy hero into an astral prison. The hidden hero is invulnerable and disabled. When cast on an enemy Hero, Harbinger temporarily steals intelligence from that hero.

Outworld Destroyer Skill 3: Essence Aura (E)
Whenever nearby allied Heroes or Harbinger itself casts a spell, it gains a chance to restore 25 percent of its mana pool. Harbinger also passively gains a bonus to its base mana pool.

Outworld Destroyer Skill 4: Sanity’s Eclipse (R)

Danil “Dendi” Ishutin (born December 30, 1989) is a Ukrainian professional Dota 2 and former DotA player. Well known for his solo mid skills, he is regarded as one of the most creative players in the scene today, and is renowned for his unorthodox play style and unconventional skill and item builds. After having played for Natus Vincere for the entirety of his professional Dota 2 career, he finally departed the active roster for the first time in September 2018. He currently plays for The Pango.

Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Dendi got an early start with competitive gaming in net cafes when his elder brother married, moved out and took the family’s PC with him. Dabbling with Counter-Strike first, he soon found Warcraft 3 where he played in local tournaments and built a love for the competition and a thirst to be the best. Though he was quite successful in Warcraft 3 and even won a few local championships in Lviv, he knew he had found his calling when he stumbled upon DotA. He picked up the game quickly and played it almost exclusively over the next few months.

Beginning with learning only supports, he practiced heavily and was quickly vouched to the IHCS1 league and soon created his own team for tournaments in Lviv. After he led his team to a championship in Kiev, he was drafted by a team called “Wolker. Gaming” and began his professional career at 17.

Dendi started playing professionally with WG in 2006. [1] He was a part of the Ukrainian squad that finished third in MYM Prime Nations the same year. Only a few months later WG made it to the grand final of one of the most prestigious tournaments at the time; MYM Prime Defending. [2] When Kingsurf. international merged with WG the next year he became a full-time member of Ks. int. [1] In late 2008 he joined DTS, only to return to Ks. int in March 2009. [3] Three months later though, Dendi returned to DTS. [4] The team would end up finishing 2nd at ESWC 2010. At the end of 2010, Dendi and DTS finished 3rd at the prestigious WDC 2010. [5] Dendi joined Natus Vincere at the end of 2010. [6]

Dendi started his Dota 2 career with Na’Vi, who quickly established themselves as one of the best teams in the world by winning The International 2011. Na’Vi continued to dominate and won many tournaments in the years 2011, 2012 and 2013. Dendi was the center of Na’Vi’s consistent stable and skilled rosters, with his performance greatly contributing to their success.

The Natus Vincere Dota 2 team achieved significant success with Dendi as their midlaner during the first few years of the game; they finished as the runners-up for both The International 2012 and The International 2013, losing out to Invictus Gaming and Alliance, respectively. 2013 would mark the last year of Na’Vi and Dendi’s dominance in the Dota 2 scene, as they only recorded two LAN victories since January 2014. The International 2014 saw Na’Vi and Dendi finishing the tournament outside of the top 2 for the first time and the following two Internationals, TI 5 and TI 6, they would finish in last place. The results would deteriorate further, as they would fail to even qualify for The International 2017, they failed to advance out of the group stage of the regional qualifiers. This marked the first year of The International tournaments without Dendi attending as a player. The 2017/18 season started of promising for Dendi and Na’Vi, who dominated the CIS scene in the early months, crowning their improving results with their second LAN victory since 2014. However, the second half of the season saw the roster break apart and finally the team would fail to even reach the regional qualifiers for The International 2018, after losing in the open qualifier.

Four years of roster instability and poor results finally took their toll on the reputation of the Na’Vi organization and on Dendi’s status as a legendary player and a top tier midlaner. After 8 years playing mid on Na’Vi, Dendi was finally removed from the active roster in September 2018. However, Dendi vowed to continue playing professionally. After a brief stint on Tigers, Dendi joined The Pango.
