Using the Dota performance test

Before doing any testing make sure that you have verified your Dota install in the Steam client to eliminate the possibility of bad local files affecting things. Check your display drivers to make sure you have everything up-to-date. Also quit Steam and Dota and restart Steam, then restart Dota, then run a test. When running a test make sure to select terrain and weather effects that you want to include in the test as they can affect your performance.

To set up for any test add – console to your Dota launch options as you’ll need to use the console to run a test. When invoked the test will gather information on the game, closing the console while running then reopening it. Each test produces a set of FPS results printed in the console. You can use the “clear” console command to remove previous console output if you want to see just the perftest results. Also you can use the “condump” console command to save the current console text to a file, named something like condumpxxx. txt, in your Dota install directory. Web sites like pastebin. com can be used to save a block of text and get a link for posting in comments sections that have restricted posting sizes.

Below are some suggested situations in which to run a perf test. You can choose a different situation but please describe it exactly when posting results (note also that the performance test runs commands marked as cheats so it can’t be used in a full game).

Simple performance test:
Start a hero demo of whatever hero you feel like. Click the arrow on the side of the Demo Options panel to hide it. Level up any skill to clear the plus button and pause the game. Then open the console and enter ‘exec_async perftest’ to run the test.

Local bot game performance test:
Start a bot game from the Play Dota menu. Level up any skill to clear the plus button. Run your hero to the center of the map next to the water and wait for creeps to begin fighting. Pause the game, then open the console and enter ‘exec_async perftest’ to run the test.

Game watching performance test:
Download a game replay to watch. Pick a specific time in the replay that shows action that you want to test. Do not pause the game in this case as the perf test will automatically rewind the playback for each subtest so that they all test the same section of gameplay. Open the console and enter ‘exec_async perftest’ to run the test. A replay has the advantage of being able to test live, unpaused game activity in a repeatable way. When doing replay testing be sure to record the match ID and specific time in the replay that was tested.

Interpreting the results
The performance test will give general information about how Dota is running on your machine but usually cannot specifically pinpoint exactly what is causing your performance to be what it is. Here are some suggestions on things to try based on your results.

First verify that Dota is running in the mode that you expect. In the system information at the beginning of the performance test output check these things.
* Check Command Line to make sure you don’t have any launch options that you didn’t realize were in effect.
* If you’re running on Windows make sure the Windows Game DVR shows as disabled.
* Double-check that the Render system is the one you expect it to be.
* Check that the Driver Name indicates the correct GPU for Dota to be running on. If you have a system with hybrid graphics and this shows the integrated graphics you will want to double-check your driver settings to make sure Dota runs on the dedicated GPU for best performance.
* Turn off the network information display unless it is absolutely necessary as it has a small cost.

Once you have ensured that Dota is running in the right mode look at the performance test FPS results. These suggestions may help you increase your FPS in some cases. If you have already customized your settings the results may not offer any additional help.

* If the Half resolution FPS is significantly higher than the Baseline FPS you can reduce the Game Screen Render Quality slider in the Video options to possibly increase your perf.

* If the Reduced drawing FPS is significantly higher than the Baseline FPS you can turn off High Quality Water and set Shadow Quality to medium or off in the Video options to possibly increase your perf.

* If the Particles disabled FPS is higher than the Baseline FPS you can drop the Effects Quality in the Video options to possibly increase your perf.

* If the Game only FPS is significantly higher than the Baseline FPS you can turn off High Quality UI in the Video options to possibly increase your perf.

If you have FPS information, not just test results, from different situations you can compare those against test results to try and identify other factors which may be affecting your perf. For example it is usually not possible to use the perftest in a full game since cheats won’t be allowed. However you can still get FPS information while playing and then download the replay of the match. You can run the perftest against the replay to see if your full game FPS is similar to your “User settings” perftest FPS while watching the replay. If the full game is significantly slower than watching a replay of the game your network may be affecting the perf and you might want to check your network settings or try different configurations, such as comparing WiFi to plugging directly into your router. If watching the playback shows the perf issue you’re having then networking is probably not the problem and the rest of the perftest results may suggest ways to improve your FPS.

The Dota perftest does not monitor system conditions such as CPU or GPU temperatures, fan speeds or so on. If you have a system that may throttle due to heating during execution of Dota this may affect the results in a way that Dota cannot present. The perftest isn’t aware of power profiles or other system configuration options which may affect resources available to Dota and those also may affect performance.

Other possible contributors to performance:

Arc Warden/Lore

Before the beginning of all, there existed a presence: a primordial mind, infinite, awesome, and set to inscrutable purpose. As the universe thundered into being, this mind was fragmented and scattered. Two among its greater fragments–who would come to be named Radiant and Dire–found themselves locked in vicious opposition, and began twisting all of creation to serve their conflict.

As war and cataclysm threatened the nascent cosmos, the will of a third fragment made itself known. Naming itself Zet, this intellect sought to resolve the disharmony and return all to perfect unity. Appalled by its kin’s conflicting nature, Zet gathered the sum of its power. In a sudden flash, it overwhelmed its siblings, and fused the warring aspects into a stellar sphere before hurling them into the darkness to orbit a nondescript world. Harmony was restored, though only the barest fraction of Zet’s strength remained. Setting its gaze on the prison, Zet chose to use its weakened power to serve as watchful warden until time’s end. For uncounted aeons, this vigil stood.

Life flourished upon the world below, oblivious to the dangers imprisoned within the softly glowing moon, or of Zet’s struggles to contain them. As the captives’ eternal clash reverberated within, the surface of the prison shuddered, over time beginning to crack. Ultimately, Zet’s depleted power proved insufficient to contain the breach, and at last the moon was shattered. The prison’s ancient inhabitants had escaped to sow their conflict anew.

Flung to the farthest reaches by the prison’s explosion, Zet was transformed by the dissonant energies of its former captives. No longer of single form and thought, its presence had become split among many–some lesser, some greater–each connected by a fleeting arc of consciousness. Struggling to suppress its own disunity, Zet sped toward the burgeoning conflict of its siblings, bending its fractured wills toward a singular conclusion: the aspects of the primordial mind must be made to reunite, or all must be destroyed lest the conflict spread further…

TI5 Group Stage Roundup: The Legitimacy of Techies and Unexpected Performances

Techies was picked seven times and lost once. A wildcard team who many didn’t peg as an underdog came to dominate its group. Cloud 9 dominated and failed in typical fashion. Whether you know anything or nothing about Dota, the past four days of the group stages have been largely incomprehensible. Over 150 hours of Dota were played — three series of matches occurred simultaneously across four time slots from 9am to 6pm. You would have had to uplink your consciousness to the internet to watch it all.

Techies Is A Hero

Techies has been in the spotlight ever since he was revealed, in dramatic fashion, amid an array of fireworks at the main stage of TI4. Since, Techies players have been described as toxic, a bane to the community, and deserving every bit of vitriol in our games, whether they are on the opposing team or ours. Professional players have bemoaned Techies, such as Aui_2000 from Evil Geniuses, who led a petition to remove the hero from the game, shortly before he would play the hero himself in a group stage match.

The rising legitimacy of Techies is shown by him being picked at all, when there are twenty five other heroes who have been abandoned in the pool. Previous tournament mainstays such as Weaver, Ogre Magi, Troll Warlord, and Sniper, have all been MIA this TI5, whether in part due to balance changes or the changing meta the past few months. Not only was Techies picked seven times, he was picked twice consecutively by Evil Geniuses in their final series against CDEC, a pivotal point for the top two seeds of their group. In the second game, EG showcased how Techies can be used without its usual lane partner, Tusk, who can set up early kills with a combination of snowball, mines, and suicide. Who needs Tusk when all you need is a Blink Dagger?

Techies at TI5 has been played as a core. Pros stay within their lane. They do not TP to a lane at 0 minutes. And they use the threat of Suicide and mines to protect themselves from ganks, while creating space for the rest of their team. Where pub players have been more static with how they use Techies, pros have been dynamic. Aui_2000, in game 2 against CDEC, split pushed a lane, teleported back, joined a smoke with his team, then jump started a kill on Gyro with a previously placed remote mine and then a Blink-Suicide.

For the main event, there may be heroes plucked from the unplayed pool, but Techies will still be the one to watch.

Cloud 9’s Wild Ride

Cloud 9 is predictable in its unpredictability. No other team would buy a rapier on it’s Anti Mage as the next item after Manta Style, or smoke Roshan with Anti-Mage and Pugna healing him, or snake between enemy lines to jungle a single Radiant hard camp before TP’ing out. No team would forfeit a 20k gold lead in one game, then come back from a similar deficit in the next game (C9 vs LGD series). Yet when Cloud 9 does it, it’s the only way we could ever imagine it happening. As one caster, Draskyl put it, “As long as Cloud9 are playing Dota 2, it will never be boring.”

Cloud 9 gained infamy for attempting a level one Roshan at last year’s International, when they were at risk of an audience tipping it off. The attempt failed and put them too far behind at the jump to come back, even by C9 standards. This coming week, we will all be tentatively waiting for another Cloud 9 moment, whether it is disastrously sublime or victoriously cathartic—it is guaranteed to not be boring.

Unexpected Performances

Some of the storylines coming out of the group stage are from unexpected performances by teams that were otherwise deemed favorite or underdogs. First, Vici Gaming, though inconsistent before TI5, was still considered an upper bracket shoe in for the group stage. Few expected that they would fall behind their fellow Eastern teams, but also Empire and Virtus Pro. On the other end of the story is CDEC, a wildcard qualifier who rocketed to the top of its group, tying EG’s record but eventually placed second because of tiebreaker rules.

Evil Geniuses was the dominant force in Group B. They won both their matches against CDEC and have seem to moved past their day one tournament woes. EG will not only be one of the favorites but will also have the backing of the Western home crowd. There’s also the heartwarming story of veteran player, Fear, who fans will recognize from Valve’s documentary.

Though Group A was considered the group of death, due to powerhouses Secret, LGD, and C9, the upper and lower bracket standings were largely determined by the final day. Prior to TI5, LGD won nearly every Chinese tournament, and they performed again by coming out on top of the group stage. On Day 3, we saw a preview of what might be an Upper Bracket finals with LGD against Team Secret. They split the series 1-1.

While LGD was dominating the East, Secret was doing the same with the West. They again looked in their top form. Though not perfect, they were methodic in the way they dismantled their opponents, in Team Secret fashion. It didn’t matter if their opponent was winning a lane or gaining an objective, because it felt like it was all part of Secret’s plan, like puzzle pieces falling into place. Secret would always manage to out farm even if they were outplayed. They rarely get out drafted (see Fnatic vs Secret game 2) and out of all the teams at TI5, they are one of the best at ending the game. Teams who struggle at pushing high ground would most likely benefit by asking, “What would Team Secret do?”

Again, there can be no International without Na’Vi. The roster has gone through a few rotations since last TI, but has eventually rounded out with Sonneiko and veteran ArtStyle. Core players may take the spotlight, but support player Sonneiko has shined in the group stage. His skill as a support is unquestionable, and then he had an opportunity to flex his carry muscles on his six slotted Naga Siren, where he nearly helped Na`Vi eke out a win against Fnatic.

In North American Dota, there was Evil Geniuses, then everyone else. It came to a point where the community discussed whether EG’s success was prohibiting the development of new talent in the region. Now at TI5 there are two NA teams in the upper bracket: EG and Complexity. Complexity in the group stage was the underdog, the upset, and now a fan favorite by surprising everyone by making it into the upper bracket. They will be playing against EG in what is being hyped as a grudge match between former Heroes of Newerth teammates. Both teams account for most of the Techies play during TI5’s group stage. Techies is a hero that is both spiteful and satisfying to win with, and considering the history of these two rival NA teams, there’s a good chance we may see it again.

CaptainFlounders Guide to Spectre 6.85, Welcome to the hardest Carry in Dota2

my doter knowledge is inferior now!

I SHALL RETURN AFTER MASTERING THE MYSTERIOUS PATCH NOTES OF 6.85!!

Vanguard is legit now, since Dispersion now synergizes with damage block like Bristleback does (and Bristle is one of the extremely few heroes on which vanguard is decent). Bes > Crimson Guard is 250 gold cheaper now, gives good armor (and you need armor on Spec now), etc.
You don’t even have a reason to prefer an AGI item over it for faster farming, since now Spec has a farming stero > Desolate , the only thing she needs is HP.

HOWEVER. it’s just *completely incompatible* with going Radiance .

Just like a 30 minute bfury on AM, a 30 minute radiance on Spec is a complete waste of gold and you should be buying a manta or something instead.

Radiance is an item with a timing window. Get it early or skip it. 23 minutes maximum. You can’t have an even remotely decent radiance timing with a vanguard, so just no.

If you go Vanguard, just finish your crimson into a manta, and actually fight early since that’s the whole point of your build in the first place. Why else would you buy an early game fighting item? Vanguard as an item is all about fighting before the 20 minute mark so if you buy an item that does that, at least use it!

Kody, Vang isn’t dead anymore.

Its like a 50% ehp boost earlier on.

Actually, I’ve been playing Spec and I think Vangaurd into Radiance is the build now. Because of the Dispersion rework, you now reflect the damage that you block, which can actually let you take stacks. You need some sort of HP regen early anyway, and max HP is always excellent on Spec.

The other reason is that going straight radiance is greedy as **** and they’re going to try and gank you. In the jungle, there isn’t as big a risk. There isn’t really a way around picking up something else first unless you have the other 4 people constantly standing around you.

I’ll start from the beginning.

THE BUILD

the first fault i can make out is that your defensive build costs more than your aggressive build. The last time i checked, defensive game-play generally means lesser-farm so. this is kinda counter-productive.

Your dislike of Diffusal Blade irks me a lot as i think it is one of THE best items to get on Spectre , along with the likes of Radiance and Manta Style (which you put in situational).
In some cases, i would actually prefer Diffusal Blade + Manta Style over a Radiance because the former makes you a bloody gank machine and gets online so much more quicker than the rad build.

also, vanguard is ded. pls no re.
The items are not explained satisfactorily, the play-style explanation is not included (while the reason doesn’t make any sense).

Overall, i could rant on and on about it but i’m sure you get the point. See, i get it, you wanted to make a small guide for beginners, but you have to understand that teaching somebody something is harder when you have to do it in a smaller time-frame, which is why most of us (the guidemakers) prefer to make them bigger and more comprehensive.

Making it big is easy, making it small takes a lot of time and skill. I hope i have gotten my point across

Can you try to create your own case using the format.

Still, that exhibit A thing would make sense.

Case: Performing without a medical license
Plaintiff: Pudge
Defence: Bloodseeker
Winner: Bloodseeker
Winning argument: I was mearly mopping up the blood that was spilling from his torso. I mean, look at him! He has cuts everywhere! That was before I met the guy!

Observer ward confirmed he had cuts before Bloodseeker even came along

Case: Brutality toward children.
Defence: Queen of Pain
Plaintiffs: meepo, meepo, meepo, meepo and meepo.

The plaintiffs argued that the QoP was running around the jungle naked, screaming at them and whipping them. Defence produced documents proving that the meepos were not children. So only the violence stand.
But in a dramatic turn of event, a riki appeared who was apparently there the whole time taking screenshots. On them you could clearly see the meepos grinning through the whole whipping then deemed consensual.
Case is dismissed, QoP blinks, Meepos poof, riki vanishes.

Case: Ganking with an expired license, Assault and Battery, Aegis theft

Introduction

Hey guys, I am writing this tutorial to tell you some notes how to play Lifestealer as efficient carry. Lifestealer is a hero that most people use in jungle until lvl 8-9 but I prefer laning with lifestealer becuase it’s more interesting and you can farm items faster if u know how to farm.

[+] High movement speed
[+] Feast make tanks easy to kill
[+] Has escape mechanism
[+] Good chaser
[+] He can jungle since lvl 1

[-] Low starting armor
[-] No disables only slow
[-] Dependable on items
[-] Low attack speed

Items

Starting items are pretty standard:
Stout shield – if u get harrased by enemy heroes or if u are jungling its pretty useful against creeps.
Quelling blade – makes your farm too easy.
Healing salve or tangos – necessary beacuse your hp will drop low so u will need to heal yourself.

Core items:
Power treads – it gives u stats, attack speed and movement speed. Enough for me!
Armlet of mordiggian – great early item, gives u survivability, attack speed and dmg. If u practice turning it off and on in a fight or while escaping you just won’t die. 🙂
Skull basher – lifestealers got to have item it has disable and it gives him enough damage.
Hyperstone – if u dont have any more money for assault cuirass or mjolnir at least try to buy hyperstone because you need that bonus attack speed for basher.

Luxury items:
Assault cuirass – item you need to buy after buying your core because it gives you armor and attack speed. It has passive which decreases armor (-5) enemies around you.
Orb effect – Mjolnir – it’s a good item for lifestealer it gives u attack speed and little damage.
Desolator – also a good item for lifestealer because it gives u 60 dmg and it passive skill is to desrease armor (-6) which stacks with assault cuirass and if u have both items enemies that u hit will have -11 armor.
Eye of skadi – very powerful and very expensive item, I personally didn’t make it not even once on lifestealer but many people I know loved the idea and I also think it’s a good item for him because it give u survivability and a lot of stats, also it passive slow enemies that u hit. So, if you have money on wasting you can buy it. 🙂

U should buy orb effect that suits your game and that can help your team.
Daedalus – very powerful item 81 dmg and a 2.5x critical strike. After getting assault cuirass and orb u should buy it for complete domination.
Abyssal blade – stun, dmg. All i have to say.
Heart of Tarrasque – A lot of hp and a lot of hp regen. Only item that is good on any hero.

Black king bar – Avatar + Rage = 10 sec of domination without stun and any spell. If u are playing against hard nukers and heroes that depend on their spells you should try this combionation.
Blink dagger – escape if you need it, buy it! I personally never buy it because I don’t need it.
Vanguard – if you are getting too much harrassed in early-mid game you should buy this item gives you enough of hp and hp regen.
Vladmir’s offering – you personally don’t need it on lifestealer but if your hard carry like void or anti-mage need it you should buy this item.
Heaven’s halberd – gives you a lot of strength same amount of dmg, slow and abillity to
Monkey king bar – Item very good on lifestealer but you can buy so many better items than disarm overfeeded enemy carry. So, you should buy this only if enemy carry get overfeeded. this like this luxury items, but in some situations u have to buy this items like when are you playing against void with butterfly or against phantom assasin.

I think I explained all items for lifestealer 🙂

Skills

Rage – one of the most imporant skills lifestealer has beacuse it makes you invunerable to almost all spells.

Feast – lifestealer’s only passive spell it gives him very high amount of lifesteal dependable of enemy. What enemy has more hp feast is stronger.

Open wounds – lifestealer’s slow and his chasing spell beacuse it makes enemy too slow and it heals you when u hit your enemy.

Infest – lifestealer’s escape spell it gives dmg in little aoe and it heals you and that’s it.

Opinion: ESPN2’s Dota 2 special was far from mainstream

ESPN2 aired a Dota 2 special last night, but it did little to attract anyone beyond niche viewers.

ESPN is considered the biggest sports network on the planet. Its moniker of ‘The Worldwide Leader of Sports’ is more than a catchy buzz phrase. It’s the truth. The Bristol, CT-based network has become synonomous with televised sports. So when Valve announced last week that this year’s International Dota 2 championships would be featured on ESPN’s online network, it appeared to be the telltale sign that eSports had arrived and received the legitimacy it had been craving for years. And while “eSports” appears to be on the right track towards that path, there are still some big steps that need to be taken to move forward.

Don’t get me wrong, the International competition has been tremendous. ViCi Gaming vaulted into Grand Finals with an epic set against the Evil Geniuses squad, while the Chinese team Newbee had clawed their way from a losing record to make it as far as they have. The fight for $5 million between ViCi and Newbee should be incredibly hard-fought and filled with memorable moments.

However, the preview special that aired Sunday on ESPN2 did little to convince newcomers to come back for Dota 2’s Grand Finals. ESPN had a half-hour to help sell the Dota 2 International Grand Finals, not just to the fans, but also to the people that are unfamiliar with the notion of competitive gaming. The network failed to do so, to the point that if anyone new to eSports had tuned into the special, they wouldn’t even know what they were watching.

First and foremost, the special did nothing to explain what Dota 2 is. Those seeing Dota 2 on-screen for the first time could see action unfolding, but with no rhyme or reason as to what’s going on. Not only was there no explanation about the game, but the term “MOBA” was hardly mentioned at all. There was no overview given on Dota 2’s rules or nuances for anyone discovering it for the time. Video packages for each team were filled with terms like “triple kill” and scenes like environments falling apart, without explaining what any of it meant.

Yes, I got to learned about Newbee and ViCi and their amazing journey. But I didn’t learn anything about the game that they were playing to begin with. This vague presentation made the special feel inaccessible from the start, serving to confuse newcomers early on. While part of the wonder of sports is the story of individual teams and athletes, that only goes so far when fans are unfamiliar with the content that they’re watching. It’s the same principle by which someone watching the World Cup can only get so engaged if they don’t know the rules of soccer.

There’s nothing wrong with trying to reach out to a greater audience. Anyone with an interest in competitive gaming should be ecstatic that Bristol decided to take this growing audience and attempt to expand it further into the mainstream. However, I feel the special did not accomplish this goal, nor did it draw any further interest into Monday’s Grand Finals, aside from the dedicated Dota 2 fans. If mainstream expansion is the goal, the special failed.

Beyond that, the special was filled with some truly cringe-worthy moments. Pulling random people for sideline interviews is almost always hard to watch, but moreso for something like a video game event, which is already looked down upon by the masses. It was especially hard not to bang my head against the table when I heard an interview with female spectators wrapped up with the words, “You guys! Super hot chicks are getting ready to play Dota 2!” It’s another reminder that for as high as the stakes are at The International, the perception of competitive gaming continues to be a nerdish fad.

Only the interview with Valve’s Gabe Newell gave the ESPN2 special any sort of value. In particular, Newell summed up exactly why competitive gaming is on the rise and why so many eyes will be glued to The International’s Grand Finals.

“One of the things about the internet is, it’s changing what entertainment is and what sports is,” Newell told correspondent Kaci Aitchison during the special. “It’s not just a few people offering an experience for other people. It’s really growing out of what everybody does. So when I have a great game playing Dota, everybody else is benefitting and that goes all the way to people creating content, people running tournaments, and people competing on an international stage.”

That’s not to say that ESPN hasn’t done a good job with embracing Newell’s vision. The production values for The International streams have been top-notch, with knowledgable commentators capably able to keep track of the fast-paced action. It’s been fun to watch, but there are plenty of areas to improve. For example, ESPN is missing a number of features that are present in more modern, 21st century channels. Twitch and MLG pride themselves on making competitive gaming a shared experience that can be enjoyed with folks from around the world, whether that means jumping into a chat room, sharing the stream with others, or accessing friendly on-demand archives. It’s something that ESPN currently lacks and an area I hope to see them work on before next year.

Here’s hoping the audience grows by then, too. But don’t look for it to grow too much based on last night’s special.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can’t enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
