Imho, this should be the default settings for all players. Currently, I may be wrong but I think the defaults are set fairly high or even maxed.
The game sure looked great when I first started playing but has become quite unstable about six months ago. And by unstable, I mean dota shutdown windows at completion of a match (possibly due to excessive requirements ancient’s death has on video requirements). [fyi, the same computer for 5 years except for upgrades of power supply, extra 8 mb ram (doubled it to 16mb), and geforce gtx970.]
If your computer cpu, ram, graphics card, etc. can handle higher settings, then go for it. But the average player would benefit not crashing their computer due to default settings causing game-stopping performance issues.
Dota2 Configuration/Settings (click cog wheel from in-game) — Configuration/Settings opens
-Hotkeys, Audio, Video, Audio, and About tabs across top of window
Click Video tab — Video Tab opens
-Resolution and Rendering sections across top of window
Resolution
Set aspect ratio to match the aspect ratio of your monitor. Use your operating system control panel or similar to identify your monitor’s aspect ratio.
Rendering
Use basic settings (fastest).

I already have 16 mb ram and new video card. Within last six months or so, dota2 patches have reduced game performance i. e. the disconnects and long load times mentioned above. Which is why I upgraded ram and video card to try to compensate. Only after reducing video settings to basic did I fix the issue.
