[SOLVED] Dota 2 Fail to Launch (Mumble compatibility issue)
So I had posted on another thread about not being able to launch Dota 2 after a certain update, but I figured I’d make my own thread regarding the issue and the solution that worked for me. My computer is running Windows 8 64-bit (may not be relvant to the issue).
Symptoms:
When launching Dota from Steam, a window briefly says “Preparing to launch Dota” (or maybe it says game, I forget), then the window vanishes, and nothing happens, no process in task manager, nothing. Also following the false launch, is a brief steam cloud sync on the game in the list, and on the steam icon in the tray.
My fix:
For ME, this turned out to be a compatibility issue between Dota and Mumble (a free voice communication program, similar to ventrilo). Specifically, this turned out to be an issue with the Mumble Overlay feature, which I was not actually using, but it WAS enabled in Mumble settings. If you are a Mumble user, I recommend disabling the Overlay in settings. If this does not work, or you do not wish to disable the overlay, an alternative solution is to close Mumble, launch Dota, then relaunch Mumble.
If you do not have Mumble, and have tried other various fixes (I will paste one method below that Valve sent me via email), I would systematically disable everything non-Dota related, such as firewalls, anti virus, all other programs, and DMZ your computer in the router, launch steam as Admin, launch dota as admin (from the folder exe), and see if Dota launches under those conditions. If it does, then you know one of those things is the issue. That is how I isolated Mumble as my cause.
I hope that helps people. I hope the devs see this and see if they can fix compatibility with Mumble on their end. I have not had this issue with Mumble with any other game. In fact, I used to not have this issue at all, and was able to play Dota with Mumble just fine. Either an update to Mumble or an update to Dota broke the compatibility between them. I will attempt to forward the issue to the Mumble team as well.
If my method did not work for you, you are welcome to try this procedure and view the links that Valve gave me:
Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation – if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).
Delete all of the files in this folder except:
– \Steamapps\ and \Userdata\ folders
– Steam. exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)
Restart your computer.
Then, launch Steam. exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.
With Steam running, re-test the original issue.
Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.
If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam:
